Vodafone is rolling out the red carpet to small rural communities, in the two percent of homes in New Zealand who will not be covered by Vodafone’s network, and who will now be able to apply for improved mobile coverage in their local area.

A new scheme is being funded by Vodafone specifically for those communities that would normally be too small to expect coverage and which fall outside the government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI).

Hi John, sounds like a good scheme.

How would one go about getting 3G coverage expanded to a 150 house suburb (Hatepe) that prior to March'11 used to get near 100% coverage? (felt like 100%)

I did send an email to VF but they requested I needed proof that coverage use to exist. I did explain that we used to get a couple of bars via VF's coverage maps, but now we get none. And I didn't take a picture of phones/data sticks when we had coverage.

Is there another avenue we can try? It seems like the cell towers antennas were slightly adjusted to better suit Taupo centre, which is when we lost out.

Thanks

(Hatepe is not on any road maps for any kind of fixed broadband coverage AFAIK)

This should be looked into further as a fault

Email me some details and I will see what I can do john (dot) reader (at) vodafone (dot) com

What a great idea. I bet the other Telcos wish they had thought of it.

It's a really nice way to get around all those nasty "NIMBY" disputes when putting up cell towers.

I have a few questions about the RBI rollout.

If we have some vodafone coverage now, do we have to wait to the roll out in our area?

Any word on pricing?  It says 'urban-like pricing' so I'm assuming that means the possibility of decent data caps (40GB+)

This is not RBI this is on top of RBI, RBI pricing has not been announced yet
