I'm thinking of changing from Telecom homeline and broadband to Vodafone but wondering if it is worth it?? Apparrently, they provide free wireless modem if you change providers. Is the Vodafone wireless speed very good? I live in Tauranga.

"Wireless" is WiFi, and WiFi speeds are not related to who your provider is.

WiFi is WiFi, with Vodafone or Telecom or whatever ISP you use. The modem still connect via the landline to the network.

I changed from telecom to VF in July 2010. Have been very happy with broadband speeds compared to TC since the change. Seems slightly quicker and speeds seem to be quite consistent. Doesn't seem to slow down as much during peak periods as it did before on TC and have certainly had no complaints. Currently on Ultimate 60GB plan and it is significantly cheaper than TC as I get the $15 MiSky rebate as well. We live in Whakatane and I think Tauranga is the closest server. Speeds will always vary due to a number of factors and my Mum (also in Whakatane) is getting speeds approx 30% quicker than we are.

if you have a look at the posts about speeds / service etc on geekzone over the past twelve months or so you will see that Telecom is rated as one of the better isps while vodafone seems to be a bit patchy.

Just a question, why do you want to change? Is there something wrong with your current setup, or did you just want a new modem? Give Telecom a call on 123 and say your thinking of switching, they maybe able to offer you something to stay.

Speeds will vary provider to provider, even if the sync speed back to the exchange is the same. Telecom from my own experience as a customer (I work for them too, but not in fixed, so take it as you will) has good bandwidth and I don't notice any slow downs during the evening when I mostly use my internet connection.

All Vodafone NZ staff including call centre are NZ based now.

If you look thru recent threads posted on Geekzone and the VFNZ forum many people may beg to differ.

but anyway moving on now

I wanted to change because Vodafone seems to have cheaper plans, my modem is also a bit outdated. So if both providers are virtually the same in terms of quality, I would like to save on the monthly costs. But I will take the good advice and talk to Telecom about a more practical plan for me first. Thanks everyone for your comments.

At the end of the day most freebie modems given away by ISP's are typically low end devices, purely because giving away high end devices simply doesn't stack up financially.

If a quality modem is important or there are specific features you're wanting then buying a modem will always be a better option.

I have been with vodafone for about a year now and am very happy. There call centre is now very good, much better than it used to be.

My adsl speeds are also very good, probably because I am 50m form the exchange.

i have also decided to join vodafone (goodbye maxnet). will see how good it is (from next week onwards). oh, if you want that vodafone modem/router/wifi, i probably can sell mine to you at a discounted price ;-)
