I just rang vodafone in regards to getting my profile changed as my modem is currently syncing at ADSL2+ speeds (16235 in DSL line stats for download) but I'm only getting 6-7mbps on a speedtest, spoke to a person in the apparent internet support queue who insisted on calling me "bro" and "cuz" who advised I was on ADSL2+ and should be getting what my modem says on a speedtest, he passed me through to someone in internet support who got me to do a speedtest,

I got 7.1mbps down and 0.77 up. I asked specifically if I had been switched to a ADSL2+ profile as my modem is syncing at ADSL2 speeds but only getting ADSL1 speeds on a speedtest, it is a brand new modem from vodafone I got last week, Plugged in with filters, she got me to do speedtests hardwired and wireless and got the same results. She then got me to try another internet browser. She did a port refresh which some resulted in a large beeping noise on my line for 2 minutes straight.

ADid a few more speedtests and she advised that she would need to log a ticket to get another port refresh done, I specifically asked for her to add onto the ticket to make sure that we are on a ADSL2+ profile as it seems we are not but she told me she would need to have the port refresh done and then would like us to try an alternate modem so could not add to make sure our profile was correct.

If anyone could explain to me why my modem is syncing at ADSL2+ speeds but not getting them on a speedtest that would be handy or provide some further insight to this.

Hi, What Modem are you using for this connection? I remember reading about an issue with a particular modem a while back.

Mine works fairly well but I have had issues with it in the past. There are a few things I would suggest trying. Try removing all devices from the phone line (e.g. phones, sky, modems, etc) and just plugging in the modem as close as possible to the demarcation point/where the cable enters the house (try it with and without filters on, with and without devices plugged into the line, with different filters, with different modem).

Changing the filters and removing the sky worked the best for me.

If the profile was set to ADSL1 on the exchange then the modem would not sync at over 7Mbps

What is your location approx?

Are the speedtests faster in the early hours of the morning?

Just did a factory reset on the modem and manged to get this to christchurch:

Its a long way to oamaru, maybe some of Vodafones goodness leached out on the way.

Edit, maybe your modem was low on resource, do you have lots of torrents running, that can make the nat router buckle

Still pretty shocking pings.

Just did another speedtest and got 14 down, the girl I spoke to last night said it was quite high.

I don't use torrents, if I do download its DDL but theres no other computers connected at the moment to the router . The only other jackpoint in use is upstairs, which has a brand new filter on it.

It'd be interesting to see if there are CRC errors occuring, does the 556a show these in the modem stats?

Hmmm, as I say I dont think its your DSL connection or profile thats all fine and the speedtests show that, you should in theory be able to get around 80% of sync as their is a ATM/TCP wrapper loss. regardless you are getting that. Sounds like the modem might be a little buggy, not that you can do much about that other than check it has the lattest firmware, or replace it.
