Hi John or anyone else

I have consistently been getting slow INITIAL response time to Web requests.

eg after hitting Enter - will be waiting up to 10 seconds or so for a Browser to BEGIN displaying Page requests.

Have found that double-clicking on my LAN connect icon and selecting Properties - causes both send & receive icons to flash & immediately force or initiate some data transfer.

It appears that after selecting Properties, a status request is made to the router or DSLAM, initiating the actual data transfer. Once data transfer is started, response time is quick for any related Page requests.

Q1.  Is this due to extended buffering within the Router or DSLAM under my ADSL2+ profile ? or

Q2.  Is this due to some packet-forwarding time delay - unless PROMPTED by clicking on 'Properties' ?

Q3. Is this how Interleaving is designed to work, thereby allowing a much higher contention ratio on the Street Cabinet exchange?

Finally - what is needed to change this INITIAL response time? A  change in profile, interleaving off, smaller packet forwarding sizes or what?

Any technical advice appreciated
Cheers

David

PS Am connected via ADSL2+, a Telecom Street Cabinet, & Vodafone / IHUG - 60Gig Account.
I have tried different routers and am hardwired into an Erhernet port in the Rear of a DLINKG604T

What do ping and tracert show, eg:

On windows:
start > run > cmd > ping www.geekzone.co.nz
start > run > cmd > tracert www.geekzone.co.nz

If you don't see run in your start menu, Window key + r is the shortcut to open the run window.

A tip: create a text file with the output from these commands and then then copy and paste in your reply here. Use Start | Run | CMD (or Windows Key + R, then CMD). Then enter these commands one at a time:

ping www.geekzone.co.nz > trace.txt
tracert www.geekzone.co.nz >> trace.txt
ping cdn.geekz1.com >> trace.txt
tracert cdn.geekz1.com >> trace.txt
notepad trace.txt

Note the double >> from the second command - this will append the output to the file trace.txt created by the single > in the first command.

Hi David,

Really need to narrow this down a bit I think.

1.  What is slow?

You said initial response to web requests.

So you're suggesting that the first time you try to access www.randomdomain.co.nz it take ages (10 seconds) but after than it's quite quick for you.

This suggests somethings to me.

The DNS is being slow.

So, what DNS settings are you using?

2.  Do you get the same experience between browsers?

Have you tried using Chrome, IE and FF?

3.  Is this same problem happening on a different machine connected to the same router?

If it is then we can start to make some assumptions about where the fault is.  At present I don't see enough info to prove if the fault is in your router, pc, the connection or your ISP.

So we need to try and narrow it down a bit.

4.  If it is DNS, have you tried swapping your primary and secondary DNS addresses around?

I've had a problem before where the primary isn't responding (because it was the wrong address, but that's not the point) and once the browser worked out that it needed to use the other server, the problem went away... expect each time I tried another website.

HTH.

That's a really good question as well... and prompted me to wonder if you're using one of those anti-virus site pre-checking systems?

They're ok on a fast machine if the provider network is quick as well, but if your machine is slow and the provider network is also slow then the intial check will take time and your browser may be stalled while it does the checking.

Next up - Yes I have been using Malwarebytes recently but only on an as needed basis to pick up stuff that Spybot doesn;t.  In general - only avast! Antivirus is running continuously with Windows Firewall.
OS is Window XP Pro with SP3 & .NET & critical patches

Finally - Looks like DNS might not be configured ? .67 /.68 from memory ?

Cheers guys! Thanks again

The times to geekzone.co.nz and cdn.geekz1.com are not that bad at all. It leaves then some http problem - either a proxy, or as suggested an antivirus checking each URL before connecting - try disabling this feature on Avast and see how it goes.

Thanks Mauricio,

The computer is a little aged - been expanded out close to max and am looking to build a new box for my son (ostensibly - why should he have all the fun !) to allow reasonable video rendering using RAID 0/1 etc

Using the old > & >> signs brought back so really old memories (DOS & a whole bunch of other OS's too)

Cheers Guys - One & All

Have had similar intermittent problem on VF Red network in Auckland.

Certain websites become unresponsive. Seems like a routing issue.

If I use a VPN service the problem immediately disappears. When the problem occurs I normally move to the VPN as it is quicker than trying to battle initial levels of Customer Support to get them to understand/recognise the problem. I think I did log a call at one stage some time ago and they eventually came back to me and said there was no problem.

The problem generally disappears after a period of hours-->days and then may come back days or weeks later.

Generally however my overall current experience with Vodafone is very good and so I don't get too upset when I need to use the VPN although obviously the situation is not ideal.

I would say a proxy may be getting in the way... But would need more investigation.

I am confused.  How could/would this be a routing problem?

Can you explain how you think the process works?

Thanks :)

Hi drajk / M.

Have re-established DNS addresses both PC & router LAN pts and will turn off the PROXY default on a VPN test circuit here - also. Only just been trying out the TeamViewer 7 VPN interface today but slow startup has existed for a long time.

Have also partially disabled some of the REALTIME SHIELD protections of avast, but hopefully not too much...
Might be the usual tradeoff till I get better hardware -

Thanks again & Seasons Greeting to all of you

Cheers

I stick with the proxy problem. Vodafone adopted a transparent proxy a few months ago, and it seems now and then there are 'hiccups"...

That would make sense to me.

The proxy is taking time to resolve the dns on the http address that it's filtered out?

How does the proxy process work exactly?  How does a transparent proxy actually interact with the users web request and other resources?

A proxy is a "man in the middle".
