Can someone explain why vodafone will not let you upgrade from a $40.00 on account plan to an $85.00 iphone plan just because you are less than 6 months into the cheap $40.00 plain (phone was not included).
Its stupid, you want to give them more money but Vodafone wont let you!
I cannot get any answer as to why from any Vodafone store.
Looks like my personal mobile, wife's and the kids mobile's and ipad data plan,our business landline, internet, mobile and web hosting will all be moving to a provider that has logic built in its plans!

Not silly at all if you you are only looking at it from your side and not the business side that actually has to build a mobile network / pay staff / Power bills / Rent / invest in future technology ETC

It's a busniness rule and is in place for a reason,

I suggest you read the contract you signed and the terms of service, You agreed to these terms when you signed the contract

How do you know he is going to pay more? They might be using more minutes on the lower plan so if the plan is upgraded to more minutes and a lower per minute rate then they spend less,

More often than not some bean counter has set hard and fast rules that totally defy logic and common sense no matter what the cost in lost revenue for the company, phone companies are more prone to this I have observed

Vodafone should look into the account holder account and see very clearly that I have been a loyal business customer for the past 6 years with business phone, internet and web hosting.. we are always a month in advance with payments! For some obscure reason I was unable to put our mobiles on the same invoice as the business land line and internet (and web hosting etc) they are also always paid in advance.
To-day my Nokia 6121 bit the bullet fell in the pool when I was garbing a kid out who kept going under. So decided to upgrade, and find your not allowed to.

Its madness Corporate bull at its best!
The cancellation fee to shut down my mobile account is $50.00 So for the small amount of $50.00 and some strange rules, Vodafone will now loose well over $400.00 per month. and you can be sure I will convince others to move as well!

Its a bit Silly don't you think JOHN!

You certainly can upgrade your plan from a $40 plan to an $85 plan with Vodafone, however I'm guessing what you really mean is you want to break your existing contract and start a new contract to get some sort of extra bonus?

If companies let people break contracts and get free upgrades all the time it would be unprofitable so most companies put in place a blanket 'no breaking your contract' policy. You'll find all the providers have this in place, even banks with mortgages i.e. a penalty if you pay it back earlier.

As its a blanket policy there are times where it seems to not make sense. If you call up Vodafone Customer Services and explain to them in a calm and rational way what you are trying to achieve I've found that most times they will come to the party.

I have a friend who was resigned over the phone with vodafone to a 12 month deal in October then when the iPhone 4s came out he had troubles getting the stores to resign him to a 24 month plan with a fresh phone discount but when he called customer services they listened and after a few escalations a manager with the right permissions put his request thru.

Ive just had a complete different experience from vodafone....

I have been paying $140 a month on a 24 month contract, have 3 months of my contract left.... got free iphone 3gs when i signed up for that plan.

I just cancelled that plan at a cost of $150 to get out of the contract, and re-signed to a lower plan which is $100 a month for more mins and txts, etc and with that got an iphone 4s for $49.

pretty good deal imo :D

from my experience its always better to go into one the shops and see what they can do, no point in ringing up.

If you have a Nokia 6121 you must be well over 6 months into a new contract, This hanadset has not been sold for a long time!

Greg read above you are only looking at the plan! You don't know what the mobile usage is at the moment and how much they are paying per month total and as pointed out something does not add up how can a customer have a Nokia 6121 and be under 6 months into a contract when Vodafone has not sold that handset for well over 18 months

As per the first message in this post, "the phone was not included" So he has had this nokia phone for at least 18 months, most likely quite a bit longer than that, everytime he reaches the end of his contract he simply signs up for a new contract with what ever deal is going at the time, using the good old nokia.

Finally after dunking the phone in the pool it dies, want's to buy a iphone and change to a suitiable more expensive plan, he has stated that it's his personal phone, not a company phone, as a user of both myself if I get near the plan limits on my personal phone, I stop using it as I don't want to pay anyore than I have to. It's a reasonable assumption that people who have a personal phone 'on account' do this as well.

John, you are making big assumptions on what his additional usage may or may not be, do you have any facts to support this 'additional usage'?, if not my assumption would more more valid that he as a personal phone user on account would be unlikely to exceed the $40/month usually. So in brief, he is wanting to spend more

Ok I have just spoken to Jim on the phone and the full story is not in the OP but cleared up now

A new 12 month term was signed 3 months ago he would like to cancel that 12 month term contract and sign onto a new 24 month term on a new plan with a new handset
