I have heard second hand that Vodafone has insufficient capacity in Central Otago. Something like half the connections required to support the network. I ask this as I found my Vodafone 845 just dropping all signal and then all of a sudden full signal (this is in the middle of 'town' not in the wops.).

So I bought another phone as I hated that phone and thought the radio in it was crapping out, but exactly the same thing is happening with my new phone.

Anyone in central having similar problems?

I have been in Wanaka, Cromwell and Queenstown in the last 2-3 months, no problems at all.

Sounds like cell breathing which is something that occurs with CDMA air interfaces.

Any chance your phone could be moving from 3g to 2g? 2g will have better indoor penetration which results in a better signal.

Any chance your phone could be moving from 3g to 2g? 2g will have better indoor penetration which results in a better signal.

OP hasn't said where they are but it's probably in an area with 900 3G coverage. There is very little difference between indoor penetration of 3G and GSM using the same band, it's not like urban areas where 2100Mhz signals struggle to travel through paper...

Yes it's second hand INFO and a incorrect

Conteral Otago is a big place and many cell sites in this area now have Fibre running to them,

Can you narrow down the location this is happening please?

From the description you have provided it sounds like a single cell issue that needs to be checked out

The Cromwell end of the Cromwell-Luggate Highway is an area for sure, it has happened to me atleast twice with my old phone, once with the new one.

Well I am sitting at home now and looking at the phone without moving it, it has gone from 2 (out of 4) bars to none.

That tells me it's sector 3 on a 2G site and these don't suffer from cell breathing!

Will do some checks next week when back in the office

i would say it's been a few weeks. It's hasn't dropped a call or anything, just when I go to send a message, check email I have noticed no signal bars where I would have thought there should have been. This map shows a location where it almost certainly has happened twice. I have had it happen on Gorge rd in QT but that was with my old phone.

I thought it was just one of those things until I heard that Vodafone 'may' be having issues due to the influx over the holiday period. I will keep more of an eye on it and let you know.
