I quite often get missed calls where I get the Who Called Txt either because I'm in a dodgy reception area, or my phone is too slow and crappy to trigger a call screen and ringtone sound, which is fine and I put up with it.

My curiosity is, why is it before I receive these txts I get a pre-text, i.e. a message appearing before the Who Called Txt saying my Who Called Txt is coming.

It goes something like this:

"yr whocalled txt is about 2 arrive. due 2 the model of yr mobile it is necessary that this message be displayed b4 your msg is displayed"

I just want to know why I get a message telling me a message is coming when I receive the intended message fine in the first place?

My phone is a Huawei Ideos U8150 and it happens every time. It never happened on any of my previous phones so I'm guessing Vodafone thinks my phone isn't capable of something?

Some handsets don't handle the SMS content well, Notice the SMS is from the number you missed the call from

Interesting. Thank you for that, now I know it's my phone at fault. Even though it receives the intended text fine in the end, I'll forever have a text telling me a text is coming. Now I can brag that my phone has a cool feature most other phones don't have :P

The bigger question in my mind, is why do they feel it necessary to use txt-speak for their notifications if the "full" text version fits in 160 characters?

Myself and others at my work on VF occasionally report issues with "missed calls" when the phones don't register an incoming call at all, despite there being no apparent reason why (i.e. good reception, variety of different handsets, multiple locations). The first you know you have missed a call is when the txt turn up a few seconds after. We have tried seeking a solution without luck. We now just accept it as a VF "quirk".

...in short, it may not be your handset at fault if your not getting calls.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Hmm, I do get missed calls heaps at work (Parnell), but not at home (Bayview). Once upon a time it had full reception all the time at work, but then one day the reception was poor and it depends where in the room I put my phone. But yes, sometimes I'm looking at my phone with maximum bars and see the Who Called Txt come through without it ringing in the first place.

You would not get the " Who Called " SMS cause the calling party left a Voice message,

I would just like to publicly say a big thank you to johnr for promptly (and unexpectedly) giving me a call and explain to me some interesting technicalities of a complex mobile network and as to why I could be missing incoming calls.
