Why does VF's hold music sound like a slighty-out-of-tune FM radio, complete with frequent bursts of static?

That said, Telecom seems to have the same issue - is it deliberate?

Anybody been able to replicate this? The hold music I have heard today is fine and I have not heard anybody else mention this.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Are you calling from mobile or landline? Mobile codecs (AMR, etc) don't generally cope to well with music.

Yes G.711 only had 8kHz sampling, which is very low compared to modern music.

Wideband VoIP codecs such as G.722 support 16kHz delivers greater bandwidth and clarity.

Personally when i have been on hold for any time longer than 5 minutes, i consider static to be better than dead silence - which telstra clear has alot of between songs. They use classical music that is too quiet at the beginning and end and doesnt trigger the silence suppression until later in the song.

..and just to elaborate further 8khz sampling, is a dyanmic range of 4khz from an audio perspective... Which is a fairly limited chunk of our human ear's 20Hz - 20khz range...

PSTN implementation further limit this dynamic range to someting in the order of 250hz to 3.3khz. DSL starts from around there up...

Places just have the music too quiet so you get it replaced with comfort noise all the time.

Worse is places that just have an actual radio for hold music, so you get to hear the dross on the airwaves when waiting for a person.
