Shadbolt:
JamesL: Don't worry guys, it'll get better with the 1gbps plans!

It does make me wonder what our threshold of acceptable performance will be, once 1Gbps is rolled out. Presumably, all of the backhaul will be dimensioned to make Day 1 be OK - which I'd guess would indeed fix the 100mbps issues.

Would we look at an evening drop to 900mbps and declare it unacceptable - because of the percentage drop - and ignore the fact that it's still nine times what the 100mbps plan delivers at 2am today?

I think you'd be hard pressed to find any server or service that's going to give you close to 900Mbps at any time, let alone peak. That said, if I were paying a premium for 1Gbps I'd expect to get at least 90% of that at any point I chose to use my connection.

A very good question.

The "acceptable" lower limit is obviously a matter of perspective and opinion.

In my opinion, a good limit marker is the highest performance of the next-best technology ... eg HFC cable should be faster than VDSL, which in turn should be faster than ADSL.

Last night I was getting ADSL downstream speed (11Mbps) on a "100/10" cable connection at 9pm - I don't think that was good enough.

stocksp: So is VF going to offer the rest of us in Island Bay (or indeed everyone who has put up with much less than we paid for for a long time this year) compensation, or do we all have to get on the phone to their call centre (I understand from their mail out that they answer the phones now....)

If people spent as much time on the phone to Vodafone as they did pontificating about compensation in this thread they'd have it by now. Honestly, I'm tired of hearing about it, particularly from people who aren't involved.

If you want compensation, call them and discuss it. If you call early the wait times are minimal.

So stop reading the thread and dont be so grumpy - especially if you are not involved

I am directly involved, I live in Island Bay.

Vodafone don't know you're experiencing issues, if you want them to know you need to tell them. If you want compensation, you need to ask. Expecting them to offer blanket compensation on the basis that you might be inconvenienced is ridiculous.

It's there for the taking if you can be bothered. If you can't, it's obviously not a big deal for you.

Has anybody on Geekzone actually seen or used a real-world 100/50 VDSL connection?

At least with cable you actually get 100/10Mbps  (off-peak) (on a good day) (sometimes) (once-upon-a-time) smile

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

there is one guy who has 2 lines at 90/40, and about half a dozen people with 70/30 lines (they are limited by the line card they are connected to and that is the max speed)

So given how quiet this thread has gone I'm going to assume people are much happier with their speeds?
Only reason I'm asking is we are still 3-4 years away from UFB, got VDSL (about 35mb). Just got a 4K tv and Netflix won't get above 2160p

Truenet says [https://truenet.nz/story/2015/11/october-2015-urban-broadband-report]

"Vodafone Cable the Standout Performer"

"Performance of Vodafone 100Mb/s Cable download is now equivalent, if not better than competitive 100Mb/s UFB fibre services.  On October the 2nd, Vodafone Cable fixed their major network problems that were evident since March (NetFlix launched it's [sic] services in March) when speeds dropped from 100Mb/s to below 5Mb/s for many customers. ..."

So it's all good now?

... unless you live in Island Bay, where there is still some minor work to be done.

There is still an evening dip, but this is improving ...

My own TrueNet stats - hourly averaged downstream speeds for the last 7 days - the bad days are worse than this, the good days are better.

@DjShadow you do realise that 2160p is 4k right?

have you been upgraded to the latest 998 band plan for VDSL? if not those upgrades are due in the next month or so, and if your currently on 35 down i would expect it to be into the 50's once the upgrade is finished.

Sorry I thought 4K was up around 3800p for some reason.
Bandplan still hasn't been upgraded

I'm still suffering congestion in Miramar.  I logged a fault but have yet to hear anything back.  25Mb down at 8pm on a 100Mb connection.
