Aren't you in Island Bay too Sideface?

Maybe the three of us are killing Island Bay's internet connection with too many speed tests ;)

Things seem to be back to normal now:

johnr:
Will not change anything as the planned work is already planned out with dates

So... can we see these dates? And why is this issue not on the network status page on the Vodafone site?

Speed is great for me on 50/2 in Johnsonville tonight...

...or not. Getting worse by the day.

Screeb:  And why is this issue not on the network status page on the Vodafone site?

because ISP's dont like keeping faults on there, especially ones like this that dont affect that many people.

The feel it makes them look bad in the eyes of other ISP's.

All ISP's are the same.

They don't necessarily have to list faults but a note saying that the Cable network is in the process of upgrades and for the customers to bear with them might avoid people needlessly ringing up and clogging up the lines with whining about something that is already being addressed.

Back in May there was a note saying something on the lines "Johnsonville cable service is experiencing some performance problems. Work is being done and completion is expected for September 2015"

You can see why they removed it... Dates are good but seeing problems that affect you won't be completely fixed for another four or five months...

Granted it appears the solution doesn't require a single switch to be turned on, and things are getting better as it is being rolled out.

How many people are affected? I asked 4 guys at work what they thought of their cable performance, 3 out of 4 replies were along the lines of 'total sh_t!', yet I'm the only one out of 4 people who have logged a fault. So there is potentially a large number of people affected. In the people queried we had Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata, Stokes Valley and Khandalla. Kandalla though it was OK because his sons hadn't reported any problems.

Please troubleshoot connections individually and rule out common issues like wifi capacity and interference. 802.11g only goes so fast etc.

VodafoneDylan: Please troubleshoot connections individually and rule out common issues like wifi capacity and interference. 802.11g only goes so fast etc.

Those are pretty basic things to take into consideration, and I'd assume that most people posting on a technical-oriented forum such as this one would have narrowed their problem(s) down already.

The affected people posting here all demonstrate one common issue: Their cable connection deteriorates to unacceptably low speeds at peak hours, particularly around 9 PM. Are poor WiFi connections, inadequate installs, and generally poor-maintained setups an issue? Sure. But those people are likely to be troubleshooting all of that individually already. Plus, those sorts of problems aren't likely to manifest themselves with such predictable accuracy as we've seen with these persistent concerns of congestion.

At the end of it all, the problem still boils down to something that is out of our hands. While your advice is sound, I'm not terribly sure that it's appreciated. To be frank, it comes off as a bit demeaning and dismissive of the issue.

I don't think that they are dismissing the issue and the previous poster was not referring to people who are on this forum and so who knows if they are technical or not.

The point Dylan is trying to make I think is that you can't just get a group of people together and assume its the same things. There are various causes of the issue and, yes, perhaps they are all congestion related but best to individually troubleshoot to be sure.

With respect, the most common issue here is Vodafone's extreme short-sightedness/incompetence in managing the capacity of their network in the face of what was a very predictable increase in demand. The fact there is currently a large, ongoing program of work to fix the capacity problems is an acknowledgement of that.

My tests from Island Bay are via ethernet only, though my WiFi and wired speeds are very similar. But at less than 10Mbps (and often below 5Mbps) during peak times the limitations of WiFi aren't really a consideration.

While I'm sure it wasn't your intention, providing basic troubleshooting advice at this point in the thread comes across as dismissive and frankly, demeaning.

Personally I'm human and sometimes I overlook things. I'm pretty good at making bread but the other day I had the oven still set to grill instead of bake. I reckon anyone can make a newbie mistake.

This is my favourite current example - mysterious radio signals “clustering near the lunchtime hour”. ;)
