Was lucky enough to go out to visit Telstra on Wednesday to see their testing and broadcasting facility. The guys there were really eager to show several T-box users the site from where TV is broadcast, and the newest versions of the T-box software that is currently being tested. They are testing some bug fixes and some new features. The interface has been sped up considerably, and a number of bugs have been fixed. Some new features have been added - my favourite being the ability to view recordings with the newest being first, not last. Hopefully will be out before the RWC as there won't be any updates during it!

Had a bunch of programs fail to record over the last few days for 'unknown' reasons. Managed to make a program record when I deleted the failure, and manually recorded (then deleted when it failed and repeated the process again). Getting a tad annoyed!

Hi Robert. I'll pass that on to the broadcast team. We've (at home) got 48 recorded progs since 1 Aug and only one's had an issue (a part record).

As an aside, I had to do a reboot last night, so maybe that'll sort things out. I also recreated pretty much all of my recordings a few nights back.

I have a theory on the possible reasons for some mystery failed recordings. I believe it might be due to some programs changing their start or end times in the EPG - and the box not handling that well.

The reason I think this might be the case is that a couple of weeks ago I went to set up a recording and it complained that there were already two recordings set. I knew this wasn't the case so I pressed the button to view the conflicts and discovered that it had listed the following:

Program A: 7:00pm-7:30pm
Program B: 7:25pm-8:00pm
Program B: 7:30pm-8:00pm

It looks like Program B might have had it's times adjusted in an EPG update and the box didn't correct it's schedule properly.

I suspect if I hadn't accidentally spotted it, it would have caused a fail. In hindsight, I should have left it to see what actually would have happened.

@ BigBadaboom the conflict of recording you explained above is happening to us a lot!
We have also had to reboot the T-box as for some reason it just stops working all of a sudden and won't do anything.
It's all so frustrating, i wish we had of stayed with mysky!
Seriously thinking of going through the hassle of switching back to them.
Definitely over Tcs cr**py t-box!

Had one of the mysterious "wrong thing recorded" issues this morning.

I've long had a linked reminder for Judge Judy. There are two episodes each weekday, which T-Box deals with nicely (usually). In the Planner beforehand I see the first 25 minute episode, then presumably when that starts the T-Box creates the second recording reminder. Today the Planner shows (as usual) the second recording as "Vibe Judge Judy 1115AM Wed 17 Aug 25 mins". BUT the recording is of "Good Morning" on ONE.

Boy does my T-Box suck tonight!!!!

While I've experienced many of the standard issues that other people have described here (jerkiness, crashing, occasionally recording the wrong program), tonight it has really outdone itself.

A message box popped up to say that it couldn't record the upcoming scheduled program because the disk was completely full, and I needed to delete some programs in order for the recording to proceed.

I was surprised at this as the disk generally has between 40 and 70% free. I scrolled through the Planner and couldn't really see how it could be full, but tried to delete some programs anyway. I tried selecting several programs, pressing delete then OK, but nothing would actually happen - the programs would just stay in the list. Eventually the system became completely unresponsive to the remote, and I decided to reboot.

It took about 20 minutes for the system to restart.

I was then able to go to the Planner and delete some programs, but I'm still not convinced it is reporting the correct amount of free space.

I then decided to watch the end of the program that I had scheduled to record (most of it was missed during the reboot. After changing the channel, the channel info box remained on the screen. After about 5 minutes I tried changing the channel to see if it would go away. I entered 3 for TV3 and waited for it to change. Nothing happened and the box with "3_ _" stayed on the screen. Waited another five minutes but the system would not respond to any command.

Rebooted again. This one took nearly 30 minutes. By now I've missed most of three programs I was wanting to watch or record. I won't be touching anything now until I've finished watching the end of one last program.

TelstraClear: I paid money up front, and pay more money each month for something that is quite simply not fit for purpose. You launched the product way behind schedule supposedly because you needed to iron out all the issues, however now nearly a year later there are still fundamental problems. I keep hearing rumours of an update coming soon that will fix all the issues. Based on performance to date I think this is a big ask, but it will be great if it happens. It still however does not excuse the appalling performance of the system to date.

Can you please explain how you can possibly charge for this system?

Keen to hear if anyone else has had similar issues to my "disk full" problem.

I believe there is a known bug whereby deleting programs off the planner can stop you from changing channels while the data is wiped from the disk. The next updates (hopefully very soon) that several of us were shown last week will fix this problem - there was an issue with some of the code that causes the system to wait until data is deleted. Keep posting - Telstra are listening and I'm hoping that they will have updates out before the RWC. Telstra mentioned they were hoping to roll some patches/bug fixes, and some new features into one big update rather than a lot of smaller ones. Until then....

From your description, this sounds like your T-Box has had difficulty ‘talking’ to the network and could be related to the planned network maintenance we’re doing (see http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/customer-zone/service-information/planned-maintenance.cfm) or due to the impacts on us by the power outages the bad weather has caused

By talking with you, the broadcast team will be able to confirm whether this is the case or whether it’s something else and we can sort that out for you.

I have these issues as well. And often waking up in the morning to a black screen where the box is completely unresponsive (green stays blue on the box and pressing it does nothing). When that happens I need to do a reboot and I can see it's updating so it takes a few minutes to come back. Why do I need to reboot every time an update needs to be applied? It seems I only get updates when I reboot, which is strange.

Having said that - I'm quite happy with the comments from TelstraClear's CEO (off topic):
