@speshnz That's a very similar answer to the one I initially got and all sources I've spoken to (except one) have given a similarly vague timeline of "next few months". I'm still working on the theory that any fixes will come with the DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade which should be coming in a similar timeline. Though "should be" and "will be" are two very different things when it comes to Vodafone.

Missed my 9pm test, but here's a 10pm test instead. Vodafone HFC Cable 100/10 vs 2degrees ADSL:

VF for the win!

Just had an unexpected disconnect right at the end of a labyrinth with three other friends in Path of Exile. Vodafone always seems to find a way to infuriate me even more.

Unfortunately, the alternatives are also completely unacceptable. My only option at this point is just to pack up and move. Really looking forward to the day that I can get fibre and never, ever look back.

EDIT

Toned things down a bit. Seriously frustrated, though, and still scoping out potential flats to move to. Dreaming of the day that I can be free of these frustrations.

What do you need beyond the 25-50Mbps you should get over VDSL?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I should qualify that, I've been surprised at how well 13Mbps has served me. With multiple users it's not always the best, but it will happily handle the best quality 1080P streams Netflix provides and latency is definitely better than that of VF cable. Assuming you can get reasonable VDSL speeds, what usage of yours won't be covered?

13 Mbps isn't enough. I was on a ~12 Mbps connection early on when I moved to New Zealand and it did not serve me well. If I wanted to watch Netflix, I'd have to cancel Steam downloads; if I wanted to chat over Skype with my parents, I needed to hope that my flatmates weren't doing much on the connection. The poor upload speeds on xDSL are a huge turn-off as well. Uploading even short videos at ~0.5 Mbps was a hellish experience.

There's no winning here. The only solution is to go and live somewhere else, and that's what I plan to do.

@Kodiak You're comparing to ADSL though, not VDSL. VDSL has upload speeds from 4Mbps to 10Mbps, similar to what you're getting now, and download speeds should be between 25Mbps and 50Mbps. You only need 5Mbps (plus a little overhead) to stream Netflix in its highest quality, leaving plenty of bandwidth for multiple Skype streams and downloads.

Might be worth paying the break-fee and going back to VDSL

with a connection like that there is no way you should be paying a break fee. TDR (http://www.tdr.org.nz/) should be able to help you out with a. getting your monthly connection feed reduced, and b. making sure there is no break fee.

Get VDSL while you have cable with someone like bigpipe, who have no contract, see if its any better than last time, and if the connection is acceptable, keep it, if not its only 1 months account fees.

There is no way I'm paying a break fee to Vodafone, if anything they owe me a refund. They're welcome to have a very public argument with me about it, but I doubt it would come to that. The customer teams can be pretty reasonable if you stick to your guns.

I switched my wifi router over to my 2degrees ADSL connection today, it's just not worth the aggravation of another night of buffering and blurry, low resolution streams from New Zealand's most poorly managed network.

At this point, if VDSL proves fast enough I'll ditch Vodafone even if they do fix their network in the next two weeks. They don't deserve my money and I'm not interested in going through this all again in a few months time.
