Quiet around here lately. Everyone's connections working fine since I stopped using mine?
Still heavily congested, but the connection is behaving surprisingly well overall for basic web use. Usually when I'm down to near-single-digit-Mbps bandwidth there's a whole slew of problems.
I'm just happy that it's not heavily impacting my ability to do projects tonight. Still immensely disappointed that it's so low, though.

I imagine it's going to get pretty krapi in the next 24 hours once Game of Thrones Season 6 begins. Between those of us semi-legitimately streaming it and the hoard of people downloading it, it's going to be more congested than Keith Richards after a nine day bender.

...I did not take this into consideration.
I should head out Californee way. I hear there's still some Internet there.

I ended up putting some feedback in via the complaints channel, got techs going to remote into our PC tonight to do speedtests. One would have thought they would have a realtime view of nodes showing if they are running at 100%

This is why we can't have nice things. If you have no clear top down view of your network, you don't know where the problems are.

Well... in the deep dark past TelstraClear did have a real time view of which nodes were congested and approx bandwidth etc.
DOING anything about it was the problem... I remember seeing seas of red at one ppoint...

This is odd as I got told they did have this and were also able to check the utilization of the node I am on while I was on the phone to them as well as them going back as far as 3 months to check and confirm that its been running near 100%.

Right, so this was in the mailbox when I got home:
Red rag to a bull, really.
One, enraging that they are trying to sign on new customers without actually fixing the problems for the existing customers. Two, concerning that their own sales people cannot identify the fairly obvious Vodafone cable running overhead from the street to the house. And three, this must be sailing *very* close to the Fair Trading Act winds. Most people would think this meant fibre (which isn't coming for years, sunshine). And "up to" isn't bolded and underlined and have an asterisk disclaiming that you might get these speeds at 4am on weekday mornings.
Wait, are they sending that out as advertising for their cable network? Everything makes me think that's advertising fibre. If Vodafone is actually using that to advertise their cable, then that's perfect to include in a complaint to the Commerce Commission!
Vodafone is outright maliciously misleading people with that sort of advertising. When they provide a connection to some people that can dip significantly below ADSL2+ speeds at peak hour, they have no right to call their service "ultra-fast broadband". With that kind of advertising, Vodafone isn't just further tarnishing their name, but also potentially the name of any other ISP that sells a service as "ultra-fast broadband".
UFB is also a fairly official site. Heck, ufb.org.nz very clearly says "UFB FIBRE INTERNET". At this point, when people read UFB, they instantly associate it with a fibre connection. UFB has a good reputation so far. I can't imagine any ISP wants Vodafone dragging down their name.
Seriously, if that's actually advertising cable, it's the perfect thing to get the Commerce Commission to throw the book at Vodafone.
