The VDSL upgrade was completed today. It's looking pretty good:
Latency is notably better both nationally and internationally.
Looks like Island Bay customers do have options after all.
that may get a little better :)
thats not a bad speed either

Yea DLM (Dynamic Line Management) which analyses your line and assigns the speed and noise margins etc. the first 10 days its analysing your line aggressively so your speed may change a little

You think John was blatantly lying to you?
Stop stirring quickymart. :)

You should upgrade to the Ultra-Fast Broadband that's available in your neighbourhood!

Sounds too good to be true.... ;)
It's such a difference having a connection that just works. When my cable speeds were 10Mbps, theoretically enough to stream a movie, I could often barely surf the web. Even when I had 13Mbps ADSL it actually worked all the time, on VDSL there are very few situations where (working) cable would make a notable difference. I wish I'd switched months ago, saved myself the drama and wasted money.
All this and it's $15.00 per month cheaper.
I think you said you tried to get VDSL but it was no go, right Kodiack?

No, that wasn't me. Someone else (maybe even a few people?) said there was a waiting period in the region for getting VDSL connections installed. We've stubbornly stuck with Vodafone here. Such "loyalty" and patience sadly hasn't helped with seeing the congestion resolved, though.
Vodafone tech support called back, pretty much confirmed nothing they can do. He was aware of congestion on the network but said he was powerless to do anything so I take from that this is reality of being on the Vodafone cable network.
The TrueNet March 2016 Urban Broadband Report has just been published
extract:
NZ File Download Speed
"Comparing performance by time-of-day is important as it shows the service degradation when everyone is using the Internet during the evening hours of 8pm to 10pm.
TrueNet uses the best of a pair of Auckland and Wellington download tests to calculate the median NZ results by hour over the month for each monitored connection.
We take the average of all median results with each ISP for each hour ...
A poor result typically shows the line drop below 90%, which usually occurs in the busy period between 7pm and 10pm ..."

Chart 6: Fibre, Cable, and Copper (DSL) Download Speed
Cable 100 (all of NZ) is represented by the broken red line.
Below are my TrueNet Island Bay cable results for the last month:
The blue line represents the average cable speeds for the rest of Wellington - perfectly satisfactory.
The black line with the severe evening speed dip is my own connection, which is typical of the Island Bay area - definitely NOT satisfactory.
This puts the ongoing Island Bay congestion problem into perspective - it is severe and regional.

Due to the small number of 100Mb/s HFC truenet participants, I believe the problem may not be quite so regional. It might be much worse than the apparent ~35MB/s low on your graph. As stated before I have worsening congestion issues too, however because I do not typically use latency sensitive applications, and what I do use the connection for at that time of night will happily work with as little as 10Mb/s. Well this week I have started playing a latency sensitive game and the issue is really rustling my jimmies! In fact for the third night in a row I am down to sub 10Mb/s at 7pm. This may have been the case for a while but now I am actually looking. I wonder if there are a lot of people who are like me; -the connection seems fine so they aren't actually testing it to see what is going on.
How is @DjShadow looking tonight? Arakura node perhaps by any chance? Time to do some rabble rousing again maybe, tt's like 2015 all over again. Little over 1 year ago this started. Shame the fix lasted for such a short amount of time -probably only 6 months before the rot set in again.
Quickymart wonders why people put up with it. -It's like having a Ferrari, only you can't take it out in the evenings. The alternative is a Corolla.
