Island Bay, cable 100/10 Mbps, node WKH

Here are my hourly average TrueNet stats for the past week:

NOTE

1.  These results are my own - I know that TrueNet volunteers in other parts of Wellington are getting better results than this.
2.  These results exclude the period 04 to 15 May, when TrueNet were having problems with their Wellington server.
3.  These results also exclude today, which has been slooooow  ...

I typically get 50% speed by 5pm, and 25% speed by 8pm-10pm.
My previously noted (15 May) latency issues have resolved.

Apparently a large portion of Island Bay has experienced/is experiencing a power outage tonight. It definitely seems to be reflected in speed tests tonight.

Power (and cable) were down from 4.35pm to 6.55pm.

Shortly after booting up, I got:

....  astonishingly high for the time of night (7pm), presumably because so few people were online.

EDIT  I had a heavy duty UPS unit which lasted through the power cut, but it was useless, as cable went down immediately, with a flashing "downstream" light for 2 hours frown

Glad your power's back! Although it was nice having a good connection for a couple of hours... :D

The connection is performing like complete and utter crap tonight now. I had to wait more than five minutes for a YouTube video to finally start playing at something higher than 360p, for crying out loud. Sometimes I jokingly refer to Vodafone as the Comcast of New Zealand, but I think that such a statement may actually be an insult to Comcast.

Not too bad here.

I'm not even going to bother with snide commentary here. The image says more than I ever could.

If it makes you feel any better, just tested in Wainuiomata at 8:50pm:  4.35Mbps.

Unusually slow tonight.

YouTube connection speed is displayed in 4 digits (less than 10000Kbps) for this and this

EDIT: A few minutes later...

Those of us patiently undecided waiting for DOCSIS 3.1 in Wellington may be interested in this post from Finland:  UFB experience

ojala:  <snip>

In the capital region [Helsinki] the cable TV internet has been quite popular as it's widely available, even we have it despite having three different fiber providers.

Until now they've been offering up to 350/20 speeds but this month they upgraded the network to Docsis 3.1 with new speeds.

It's part of their process to bring the HFC to the fiber speeds so that they can offer reasonably uniform service to all the 600.000 households they connect.

HFC is available as 50/5, 200/20 or 1000/100 now.  The price, uncapped, is from 25€ to 50€/month (41 to 83 NZD/month).

The initial reports for the 1000/100 service are reasonably good, people getting 900+ downstream speeds although many have had to call the customer service to check for missing channels to get the full performance, especially for the upstream.

From business perspective I think the reasoning behind all this development is two fold.

The HFC service has been popular and it's really convenient, if you need a broadband internet access, you'll visit one of their stores and while you walk back home the service is activated.

It also "moves" to your new place easily.  BUT they've lost market share due to the increased number of fiber connected homes.

<snip>

EDIT  [my bold]

Oh nooo I have just ordered cable from Vodafone :/ I'm in wainiomata. I was going to get fiber but after 6 cancellations from chorus I decided to go with cable as the house already had cable. Oh well I guess it will be better then spending an insane amount on Mobile data

You will enjoy Fibre a ton more than cable at the moment
