I'm not asking @MikeHales to defend anything, just either give an answer regarding timelines, or let us know that he can't. "Soon" has proven pretty meaningless in the Vodafone world and node upgrades don't seem to mean much either.

The node upgrades earlier this year made a difference to many people including myself, including Kapiti, and even Island Bay for a while.

Vodafone must have some timelines around this. If they can't share them, it's a pretty safe bet they're not pretty.

That's a big assumption.

I'd like to see dates but it is a reasonable option not to publish dates if it stokes a smaller fire. It's not just a "not pretty" timeline that would justify the current situation. There's not much use in providing dates if they don't really exist because the timing is highly variable or the critical path has a lot of fluid dependencies. If Vodafone publishes dates they will be on a hiding to nothing in any situation other than a trouble-free implementation.

Node upgrades have had no noticeable impact on Island Bay since September/October last year, as far as I'm aware. The network has fairly consistently degraded since then, both in Island Bay and other areas previously unaffected.

No, it's common sense. Plans have dates. At the very least they have to align with budgets and financial years. If they have some level of confidence in those dates and they look good, they'd have no reason not to share. Either way, in the absence of communication from Vodafone, assumption is all we have.

I don't think anyone is expecting specific dates, just rough estimates. If Vodafone can't give a window of a couple of months, even conditionally, they're in even more disarray than this thread suggests.

But how about we wait to see what Mike has to say?

Yeah there's no real point speculating but what joy would there be in life if we couldn't rabble on about the injustice of the world that we can't control? tongue-out

Working for an organisation similar in size to Vodafone, I can say it's not uncommon for a project to be pushed from one financial year to the next, then to the next... it could be an issue of human resources which are actually pretty fluid, or their investment committee sees the cost/benefit and it gets prioritised down below more urgent (value-add) projects, or it could be being able to align resources between external parties, or a number of other things.  Sometimes it's actually a good thing because it means the company is aware of what work needs doing and projects are on the plan, well ahead of when they could possibly have the resources to do them, which shows good foresight.

The problem with giving specific dates to customers when you're talking about a large project is that you may have the best of intentions to complete your five-phase project plan, but due to the above or any other issues, you only get through three phases and the other two are pushed out to next financial year when the resources are available, for instance.  Then you've made your company look bad and your customers unhappy... the rule of thumb is to only provide information you can ensure is correct; we're more likely to seethe on a low simmer from information we don't know, than boil over like we would if we thought they had lied to us (even though it would likely be out of their hands).

freitasm: I have heard that coming week will be a good week.

Sounds like pretty much every week for the past year. :(

I've not got my hopes up, but I will be happy if Vodafone does actually get something done for once.

VDSL install booked for Tuesday, 18 years of paradise.net logins/subscriptions/contacts migrated, see ya later Vodafone!

I'll think of you fondly when I discuss the next telephony or WAN contract that comes up at work.

How do you know what node you are on? And I presume WKH is one you don't want to be associated with right now?

You presume correctly.

Node WKH Berhampore (which services Island Bay) is actually a cluster of "child nodes" joined to the original WKH node.  It is notoriously congested.

Something has been done "soon", it seems for W93. Hoping these speeds stay, but that's still no excuse for not getting fibre.
