Fun fact: It has taken Vodafone longer to fix their cable congestion issues than it took to build the Empire State Building. That was in 1930.
If the Empire State Building has started construction on the same day this thread was created, they would have finished exactly "two weeks" ago.
The connection has been especially rubbish today. I currently cannot load either YouTube or SpeedTest.net at all, and YouTube as a whole has been an immense bloody headache for the last several hours.
Seriously, Vodafone, you're probably the second-worst company I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. You're lucky that Courier Post exists... :P

looks to be some form of (maybe) international traffic issue at the moment
Things got much worse after my above post. YouTube, GeekZone, SpeedTest.net and several other websites were entirely inaccessible. Flatmates said they had several friends on Vodafone cable complaining about the same issue. This page took a whopping 300 seconds to load. Not sure how long it will actually take for this post to go through. All I know is that this is once again setting the bar lower than I'd have ever thought possible.

Yeah, it seemed surprisingly widespread. Several of my friends that aren't on Vodafone didn't seem to be experiencing any issues with the sites that I was having difficulty accessing, though. Weird.
Could it be worth Vodafone looking at say who the top 20 users on each node is and moving them onto VDSL if available? In saying that if they did that then it confirms no faith in the cable network

Sure, I suppose they could, but I doubt it would do much to resolve the congestion woes. The big problem is that everyone and their mother is going to be using their connection at peak hours for Netflix, YouTube, etc. Many people have dropped television as their primary source of entertainment, and are now feeding their entertainment needs solely with the Internet.
At the end of the day, Vodafone really does just need to sort their crap out and solve the problem. Stop-gap solutions aren't the answer, unless Vodafone wants to continue damaging their long-term profitability. I for one almost certainly will not ever go back to Vodafone for anything after I finally ditch this connection. Vodafone has shown that they are a company that cannot consistently provide the service that they advertise. If they can't be trusted to offer even a semi-decent connection at peak hours, then why should they be trusted for anything else?
I'm glad that there's competition in the ISP market in this country. Sure, at the end of the day the lines are still owned by a small subset of companies, but if one particular provider gives terrible service, there are at least other options. In the United States, the choice is to basically go with the big-name cable Internet option, or with painfully slow DSL. We're pretty much in the same boat in Island Bay, but at least VDSL is competitive. I'm especially impressed with the speeds that gbwelly has been getting on VDSL.
Not regretting the move to VDSL. Took the cable modem back to the Vodafone store today. Guess what? Another 20 minute wait! All that is left is for the engineer to come out on Monday. Fingers crossed he doesn't kill the new connection while he's disconnecting me. Wouldn't surprise me.
Why did you take the modem back? Mine was collected by the person doing the disconnection - also do you have a receipt that you returned the modem?

Did you have Cable TV also? if so end up going to Sky?

Disconnection is on Monday while I'm at work, not taking a day off. Yup definitely got a receipt :-)
