I am bit confused here. I thought a transparent proxy which TCL uses would break any DNS setting in your router (including OpenDNS or Google's or Unblock-US) because it would resolve the DNS itself.

Well that is the reason I was told Unblock-US doesn't work when you're on TCL - the destination site still thinks your source IP is in NZ since TCL sends it as part of the host request.

Other more network savvy folks feel free to step in here.

Or perhaps the specific problem here resolved apparently by using a hosts file bypasses DNS completely.

Those domain names are wrong - they have changed to:

Well, I think only the sports ones have changed.

Anyway, if you have control over your router, and use dnsmasq for dns, then you cant put this:

address=/.id.velocix.com/60.234.60.196

in your /etc/dnsmasq.conf - will resolve *.id.velocix.com to 60.234.60.196

Then when the domain names inevitably change, you won't be affected. That is what I've done anyway.

Wow its amazing that users can 'fix' (workaround) this, and yet Telstraclear can't. Heres hoping that vodafone can clear these issues up.

Well vodafone gives its customers free isky traffic, perhaps telstra customers will now the same deal :)

Tracing that IP it looks like its in Los Angeles. Telstra won't peer in New Zealand so probably cheapest to send them traffic from the USA.

Telstra's peering policy is costing them more....

I saw on the website today that TCL are now officially offering iSky here.

Does anyone know if that means they have fixed previous buffering issues with live TV?
I do note this statement but it seems that the TCL pairing causes major issues here too.
The programme I'm watching sometimes pauses or buffers. Why is this?
iSKY is delivered over the Internet and you may sometimes find programmes, and especially very popular live TV, may pause or buffer. There are many reasons for this, including how many people are online when you are, how many people are trying to watch the same programme as you, the specifications of your computer, and what other activity there is on your Internet connection, including others in your home accessing the Internet while you are. As iSKY is a service provided by SKY to all its customers (not just TelstraClear TV with SKY customers) we are unable to control any pausing or buffering.

I also note the following statement:
Broadband usage is metered for iSKY and use will contribute to your monthly data usage.

Voda is a Sky partner so when can we reasonable expect have iSky unmetered?

Had to come home to test it because it wasn't available at work. Seems fine. No buffering issues. No hosts file entries.

even this is working, it's forcing orcon to pay more money to telecom for bandwidth due to telstraclear's peering policy. (most NZ providers buy off telstraclear or telecom transit to those networks, it's not unreasonable to redirect those users to the US where bandwidth is cheaper)
