The Body Corp probably heard 'rewiring' and has visions of new cable being laid into the building and/or from the demarc to the apartment. Walls being ripped up etc etc

In reality, if there has never been a line to that apartment, they will likely just need to come in and jumper from the exchange demarc across to the apartment.

Might pay to clarify the scope with the body corp. Also - body corp can't deny reasonable access for this type of stuff.

This is quite possibly the worst thing you can do.

Why is that?
I don't mean just stop paying without notice; but this is obviously a failure on their part to ensure your rented premise is up to an acceptable level of service. Where is is not, you can give written notice of the dispute, and are within your rights to withhold a portion of rent etc.
Anyway, lets not carry this OT, but that's the general gist of what I mean.

Hey Guys,

WOW what a drama.

The property manager had emailed the body corp asking for access to the room, which they were willing to facilitate if she accepted responsibility. She was either too lazy or not willing to accept this so we were stuck emailing and phoning her over and over until she said she'd had enough and to stop contacting her. It was she who tried to push us into trying to sign up with an alternate provider because she was adamant the access could be set up remotely even though she was told otherwise by a Chorus technician ><

We reached out to the body corp and were told not to contact them again regarding this matter and to sort it out with the property manager...

This went on for weeks and weeks.

We briefly checked the rates info on the internet to try and find the landlord's details which were not published online. Fed up, we were all set to get some advise from the community law centre about our options, including looking at whether the Tenancy Tribunal could sort it out.

The evening before we were going to seek advise, one of the other flatmates had a chance meeting in the lift with the landlord of one of the other apartments and explained the story. The landlord contacted the body corp who then sent out a key to the wiring room. We had internet 3 days later :)

Since the lease expires in September and we'd like to continue staying in the apartment, we won't give the property manager grief about it until we've signed a new contract!

All's well that ends well. I hope we never have to deal with that woman again...

Wow, that sounds like a nightmare. For such a simple thing too.

Clearly a sign of total ignorance, if you are going to be a body corp representative who has to deal with day to day utility issues, then you either understand the issues and let tenants get on their legal way, or give it up.

I currently work for a company that also acts as a property management company for several large apartment buildings in Wellington, I have asked the staff involved in this area about this, they were astounded that you should put up with such nonsense. If anyone has this type of issue again in future you should immediately contact the appropriate authorities at housing NZ, if pushed they soon can come down like a ton of bricks on these ignorant idiots.
