johnr: The OP was on a clothed Vodafone connection and then moved to Naked on the same line

I'd put a beer on the internal wiring being very poor. With a master filter to sort out the probable wiring issue the OP would probably see a further possibly signficant increase.

Geektastic: Downside is that I now have to instal wireless monitoring for our house alarm, as the panel is 6 years old and won't support internet monitoring according to Chubb.

Pretty much every alarm panel can support Ethernet with an adapter. Chubb's attitude towards Ethernet monitoring is pretty much that it's a fad that's never going to catch on.

My suggestion would be to move to an alarm monitoring company (Alarm NZ is one) who aren't stuck in the dark ages.

Wiring is a difficult issue in our home.

Built in 1992 or so and 100% concrete walls and floors with mass concrete fill in the block voids and steel rods.

Makes life very hard to alter or improve wiring.

I will ask them.

Chubb said the panel - a Chubb AFX - won't support it.

That comment pretty much backs up my view of them.

Chubb AFx panels support Contact ID or SIA for monitoring. There are lots of options for adapters to convert these to IP.

Assuming your wiring is in series do you know where your modem is in relation to the demarc? If you've got naked DSL and can position the modem at the first jackpoint you could disconnect all other jackpoints. If the modem wasn't at the first jackpoint you could bypass the other jacks with scotchlok connectors.

What zone do you fall into on the Chorus coverage maps? 5/10/20 Mbps?

Given the OP is on naked BB, why bother with a filter?

If the panel will do Contact ID then call Brian at Alarm NZ and get a postix box.  Saved me 66% a month on monitoring costs.

There would be plenty of problems that could still impact speed. If the OP post the modem DSL stats (which we asked already two times before) then people will be able to say if even more speed can be achieved.

Really shouldn't slow you down. Find the lead in on the outside of the building then install a fresh external cat5 cable around the out side of the house to where you want the modem and punch in though the wall, add sealer, job done.  Or you can run up the the roof space and come back down in side some where.

MurrayC: I'm in Shirley Christchurch and moved house last month but within the same suburb. Before I was with Telecom and was getting around 5 down and 0.5 up. Changed to Naked Broadband with VF and got a significant improvement: https://www.speedtest.net/result/2650916335.png

Could of course be a bit closer to the cabinet or exchange...

I'm guessing the POTS must have been being exchange fed while the DSL is MPI?

Or did you get a new modem at the same time?

Because in many cases it can often be far easier to install a master filter then disconnecting all the other wiring to the modem, particularly if the modem is several hops along in a series install. Installing a master filter means you can also then run either POTS or voice from an ATA around all the existing jacks as they will still dfunction for voice.

Agreed, and the first thing I'd be doing is finding where the lead in comes into the house, disconnect the house wiring, and running a sync test at that point with the modem to see what the OP can actually get off the lead in.

Yeah got a VF supplied modem to go with the new Naked Broadband. It was free based on a 12 month contract.

What did you have before that Murry?  An old 504 ADSL1 puppy?
