I have updated the topic to include a comment by Vodafone New Zealand.

This would only be unethical if the buyer is not made aware of this condition before committing.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have no problem with this, the concept of selling something below cost and making the margin on the ongoing running costs has been around since the first disposable razors were invented (the ones with the replacement heads that is), King of Shaves gives away their units.
For someone who isn't intending on switching networks, the fact you can get a better handset for less is quite appealing. I'm, pretty sure NZ is the only country that hasn't gone down the full handset locking route so we are pretty lucky in that regard.

I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for cheap unlocked fones in NZ. Will this progressively creep up the the mid range fones?? At least Vodafone's $30 unlock price is way better than the AU$75 I was charged a couple of years ago for a cheap Vodafone prepay fone in Australia. The unlock cost more than the fone cost.

locking allows the phone to be sold more cheaply than when not locked, not the other way around.

He meant the unlock fee he paid in Australia cost more than the phone when he bought one there a couple of years ago.

He didn't say unlocked phones are more expensive.

I was referring to the first part of his post

"the beginning of the end for cheap unlocked phones"

I was saying that without locking, you dont really get cheap unlocked phones, you get expensive unlocked phones.  locking allows the phone price to be much cheaper, lower than the cost.

The fone in question was about AU$70.  Vodafone NZ had the same fone unlocked for NZ$99.  The NZ$ then as similar to what it is today..

I don't see a problem with it apart from the hassle of getting it unlocked. As well is it is clearly advertised. I could see it happening after skinny started doing it, and were allowed to do it. Will it automatically get unlocked after 9 months, or will the person have to apply for it to be unlocked. Then what happens if someone buys one second hand, after 9 months, and tries to get it unlocked, but they aren't the original owner. How hard will it be for the new owner to get it unlocked, and I hope they wouldn't have to pay a fee to do so.

This is an interesting article about it http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/8769785/Complaint-over-Vodafone-Sim-locking

At least now Vodafone is saying it is doing it to offer a cheaper option. Great stuff.

A lot better than the terrible PR spin from the last time they tried doing it.

The problem I have with this is the idea of these phones being sold locked because they are "discounted".

The two phones Vodafone is currently locking are priced at $109 unlocked or $79 locked (Nokia C2) and $89 unlocked or $59 locked (Samsung E3309). The previous retail prices for these unlocked were $89 and $59. In other words, the prices of the unlocked phones have been increased, rather than the locked phones being discounted. (Well a $10 discount on the locked Nokia but a $20 price increase on the unlocked model).

If they actually were discounted or sold below cost and were network locked I would have no problem with it.

You are assuming they were not at all discounted previously.

Nokia C2-01 average price on pricespy is $79
Samsung E3309 average price on pricespy is $59

These are unlocked brand new phones. Harvey Norman is doing a deal on the E3309 for $28....

I'm with Uglyb0b on this one.
