Hi Paul,

It's good to see you again on Geekzone. Do you have any idea of the expected rollout timetable for 3G services around the country?

With coverage being restricted to only urban areas at present, it's not much use to those of us in the countryside who are stuck on GPRS...

No update/timetable as such except to say it's definitely going to happen and we've got a technology roadmap (cough cough 900Mhz cough cough) that is supposed to work well in rural areas and that will be happening soon.

Sorry I can't be more specific but we'll make a big announcement as/when we are able. Hats, balloons, cake, that kind of thing.

Been there, done that. I was streaming BBC news live to my iPAQ via the Telecom CDMA network 4 years ago. Trying the Voda service has no appeal. Paying you $2.50 p/week for the privelege has even less appeal when I already give Sky a fair whack of wedge each month anyway.

Now streaming any Sky channel I want out of my Tivo over the Internet to my Treo 700 is priceless!

Hi Jama,

That's lovely and I'm glad it's working for you. But you'd have to say that you, or indeed most of the Geekzone community, don't really fit the "average user" mould. If you have the ability to do that then that's great. Most "mainstream" users want someone else to go to the trouble of setting up the relationship with the content provider, putting it on their phone for them and generally doing the behind-the-scenes stuff - they simply don't care about technology enough to want to do it.

Even I don't want to muck about with the kit that much (I'm far from being technical although I do love the stuff). I'm happy to wait until someone offers the service. Same with music - I'd much rather pay $1.99 a song from the Vodafone Music Store than mess around taking music off my laptop and putting it onto my mobile. Being able to receive a song on both my computer and mobile device works well for me because I'm lazy (and because it makes it easier when I get a new handset and since I've got a Sharp 770SH that'll be sooner, rather than later).

Still, that's not to say there's no room for folk like your good selves who want to take the lid off and play. It would be boring if we were all the same.

Oh, don't throw it out Jama. I'm sure we'll be trading them in for those folk that want to upgrade. Just like we do today with GPRS cards and 3G and 3G Broadband.

Already have a Vodem Paul. Just don't use it that often as (like others on GZ) I find the performance to be quite sub-standard.

Don't go doing that yet - if Vodafone are still going to run sites off 2Mbps single E1's for the data backhaul then a class 10 HSDPA device won't be any faster!
