kingjj: Plenty of illegitimate users drowning out the few legitimate ones I guess. Just keep that in mind next time someone moans about missing an important call from insert-government-agency-here because they ignored the blocked call.

Anything important should be written to you by post. Otherwise how do you confirm identity over the phone from an incoming call.

Request an extension/name/dept and call back via a publicly listed number. Some thing's can't wait for post (especially if it drops to 3 days per week).

IMHO there is no legitimate reason to cold call a customer other than the said organisation having a product that I'm simply not interested in. I worked as a telemarketer for a call centre to resell insurance on behalf of ANZ - the amount of money wasted chasing up people who had no interest in products did more harm to the ANZ/National Bank brand than any sort of money that it might have bought in.

There a difference between a call centre hawking goods and services to an unsuspecting public and an official organisation making contact in an official capacity (Police, IRD, Winz etc). I've even received calls from my bank that came via blocked numbers (with info provided to place a return call via their main number).
