adamj: 1) Is Vodafone allowed, under NP, to only port to On Account?

2) Does anyone know if I can port my Woosh number (04 907 XXXX) to another VoIP provider, such as iTalk?

1) Yes under the regs the carriers have to release the number to another carrier when requested

What service that number is used on is not controlled by the regulations!

I was just about to ask the same thing, how can Vodafone get away with no allowing Telecom or Vodafone OA customers move to PrePay? Peronally i think it's a stupid move and they couldloose more customers then they gain from it.

As johnr said, the services are not regulated, the carrier can do what they want as long as they release the number if requested.

The regulation is that if Telecom requests an 021 number to be ported, Vodafone has to release it (with authority of course). Once Telecom (or Voda) has the number they can do what they want, and their business rules apply

The requierment is that telcos must be able to out port a number but not inport a number. Telecom for instance cannot port in a local number to certain exchange types.

One of the requierments however is that customers should have the same service avliable to them as customers with a parent number.

Voda may be in trouble here as they are not offering web2txt or account login from ther website for people who have ported an 027 number.

As for compatible handsets with Telecom:

·         Samsung W531 Worldmode phone·         Nokia 2355·         Nokia 2865·         Nokia 2855·         Nokia 6165i·         Nokia 6275·         Pantech TX-1000C·         Sanyo 6600·         Sanyo 8400

·         Palm TREO 700wx

All new handsets launched from here on out will be compatible.

Interesting take on Taniwha's blog about NP.

#1:  Why shouldn't the govt let Vodafone "get away" with not allowing Telecom or Vodafone customers move to VF prepay???  The govt's task isn't to introduce legislation and trying to stop companies from making silly decisions....

#2:  And yes, this is a stupid move by Vodafone....  Blame themselves...  :D

Who knows the logic, maybe its to keep all Prepay Numbers as 021 prefix so that all the txt a holic kids don't get confused

Why should the government do anthing? It's a business decision by Vodafone and nothing to do with the legislation. Portability is about allowing somebody to move between networks and keep their number it's that's exactly what it does. If you're a Vodafone prepay customer but want a plan tell Vodafone you think their service is poor not allowing you to keep your number upon moving to a contract.. and move to Telecom.

Vodafone have lost the plot completely due to incompetant management. It's hardly the government's role to legislate against that. You have a choice, especially with portability.

This will not work as you can have a prepaid telecom handset with an 021 number now.

You'll have to excuse me for being a little OT here but... I have just spoken to Slingshot to enquire about porting my Woosh 907 XXXX number to iTalk and there response was as follows:

Nope, can't do it, not planning on offering this in future either. If you want to move to iTalk you'll have to have a new number.

Are they somehow exempt from Number Portability?

Ask them for a specific exemption document. According to the LMNP Terms:

2.1.4 All Service Providers and Carriers must provide LMNP in accordance with these LMNP Terms and any relevant legislation or determinations of regulatory bodies except to the extent that an exemption has been granted to a Carrier under the Network Terms. If such an exemption has been granted under the Network Terms, the relevant Carrier will be exempted from particular provisions in these LMNP Terms in relation to the specific period and purposes, Customers or classes of Customers, or conditions for which the relaxation has been granted under the Network Terms.

I suggest you try other provider. Like VfX for example.

Check all about it in the LMNP page.

Number portablity requiers providers to be able to port OUT numbers they do not have to accept porting IN numbers,

Of course by not allowing customers to port in they are turning away good business so be it on thier own heads.

I think lots of people have been lured away from Telecom with the promice of better rates and better service and while they may be getting better rates in many cases the service they recived was inferior to that of Telecom's

Certainly NOT in my case...

I have replaced 3 Telecom landlines with VFX now and couldn't be happier with the service provided from WxC.

Then of course there are the features which quite frankly leave Telecom's offering in the dust:

1)  Voice Mail to e-mail
2)  Different Voice Mail messages for BUSY and NO ANSWER
3)  Caller ID is free
4)  Web-based setup for the Phone Options

And last but not least the Cost Savings:

5)  $11.25 incl. GST per month line rental (or $7.95 for second and subsequent lines)
6)  5c incl. GST per minute anywhere in NZ

Once Naked DSL arrives, I'll be porting another landline to VFX.

Given the choice, why would you continue to pay Telecom's $45 per month charge for a voice line?

I'm into my 14th month in my 24 month YouChoose contract. As soon as i reach 18 months, the disconnection fee is only $60 I think.... if Vodafone havn't introduced BestMate by then, I'll be taking my sexy 021 number and moving it to Telecom!!

Vodafone probably wont feel the effects of these stupid decisions for another 6 months... then they will sit around and realise they got it wrong, on multiple occasions.

I'm at about the same point but hadn't realised the disconnection fee is only $60 Cool Definitely food for thought...

I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.  Would like to change to Prepay but don't want to lose my existing number.

The only thing that puts me off is the requirement to buy a CDMA phone.  Now, if Telecom had a competing GSM network, then it would be a different story.
