Yes. RF over fibre is supported. Current ONT's don't support this but the UFB network has been engineered to support this.

As for no cable network in Auckland, a campaign by the NZ Herald and opposition from the Auckland City Council stopped this from proceeding. This network was going to cover a large % of Auckland.

RF is possible but I'd expect IP is probably more likely.

Really? Why would they have put up such a stink about this product? I personally would have welcomed it with open arms to be frank. At the time that is, but considering fibre, yeah...

I could think of a whole pile of reasons to object.

Not everyone wants HFC cable adding to the noise on their polls.
Not everyone is happy about Telstra extending its reach.
Not everyone even wants internet, even less 10mbit.
Some people wanted fibre and knew that HFC would put a quick end to fibre in the short term.

That's 4, I'm sure I could think of more if pushed.

I was working at Telstra Saturn (then Telstra Clear) at the time this happened. When Telstra Clear came into existence in December 2001, the cable network rollout in Christchurch (around 60% complete at the time) was "paused". That was over 10 years ago.

As to Auckland, people were terrified of the cables and were strongly in opposition to it. I saw an article by Ernie Newman(?), head of TUANZ at the time saying how good cable was, but little else in favour of the rollout.

The mayors of Auckland at the time weren't exactly supportive either.

RF over fibre is a great technology - FiOS uses it for their TV and it works very well.

The issue really is one of whether there is a need for the technology in NZ as we move to an on demand future rather than a broadcast one. It does form part of the CFH spec though, and is the main reason why MUDs need fibre to every apartment rather than any form of copper delivery within the building.

I would have loved to connect to Telstra cable if it had been avilable in Auckland. I remember paying appros $60 per month back then for jetstart ADSL. Plus the usual line rental fee on top of that as well. It was only 128K down/up. 10Mbit would have been heaven on earth back then.

Back in those days, cable plans were way more competitive than ADSL plans. Now (reading most of the complaints on here) it seems the opposite is true.

It's a shame really, because they've got a really good network at their disposal, yet they keep screwing people on prices and crap internet caps.

Chorus will be putting fibre in eventually.

If thats the case, thats a real shame really :( tbh it's kinda a silly move by auckland counsel if thats the case

Why is it a silly move? Many areas don't have overhead power lines anymore, and it makes little financial sense to fund deploying a cable network, with FTTH happening (which imo is superior).

What poncy part of Auckland do you live in?? Apart from new sub divisions and some main roads power and phone distribution is still via poles so slinging TCs cable wouldn't have been a problem.. I live in Pt Chev and apart from some of Pt Chev road all being underground the rest is above ground..

I believe it was a NZ Herald miss information campaign which the AK Council bought into that killed any chance of TC moving into Auckland..
