RunningMan: If you are in an area without 900MHz 3G, try turning 3G off. I've previously had problems where 3G reception was poor and the phone was flicking in and out of 3G which mucked around with tethering.

Doesn't solve your problem, but may help track down the issue.

This actually worked. The phone reverted to GPRS and I got connectivity on the phone and through the hotspot. But it was too slow. An 8MB download was going to take 41 minutes. Remotely driving a headless server just wasn't happening.

But at least it worked.

I'll try "resetting network settings" as some have suggested.....after i work out how to do it. :-)

I did completely factory reset it when it was given to me early last week. But I'll do the limited reset and see if it works.

Try resetting the network settings as above, but given it's had a factory reset last week, it's less likely that this will impact it. Reception on 900MHz seems to be better on the 4 than on higher frequencies (anecdotally), but the phone will try for a marginal 3G signal over a solid GPRS, and ends up hunting back and forwards, with the result being the network connection is not stable.

The antenna design obviously changed with the 4s, not sure if it's better with a later model phone.
