Because a lot of people still view overseas calls as being expensive, its a lot more for them to dial, and it raises the whole issue of professionalism when a supposed nz based company is using a number in a whole nother country. People will then think its going to some off shore call center type thing etc etc.

Only 2 or 3 pages per month and it's not like it is costing me anything. I just delete those e-mails as soon as I see a Caller ID originating from the US.

I don't know how they managed to get hold of my number -- maybe they try every number in the US to see if it's a fax or not???

I agree, but in the case of the US, it's a false perception these days. We use Digiplus to send all international faxes:

http://www.digiplus.co.nz/

Normal rate to the US is 15c per minute, but only 12c per minute on Thursdays and Fridays.

Agreed regarding the Professionalism angle. I wouldn't use this service for a business.

In my case it's used solely for my home office with the US number being given out to a pretty small number of people.

Ahh.. they only take faxed applications!

The other thing is that they are offering unified messaging so that people can leave messages as voicemail. Skype messages are no longer so great so I hope this will be better.

Faxaway would be ideal in your situation then

On the one or two occasions I've needed it, I found their Tech. Support was good.

I'm now set up.

As a trial I got someone to fax me, and it worked fine.

I also emailed the fax number@faxaway.com, and that came thru too, but I was charged 11c for that one !

You are invoking the "Send Fax" regime by doing that...

Effectively what happens is that Faxaway's server dials out via the PSTN and sends a fax to your assigned number. Therefore you are billed for it, even though the recipient number is yours and has been allocated by Faxaway.

I can't think of any circumstances under which it would be advantageous to do this actually...

I guess you just wanted to do a test, but it will be chargeable.

Having said that, 11c US is still reasonable for sending a fax to one of your customers in the US. It equates to 15c NZ which is the same as what Digiplus would charge you, and probably less than some other Telcos out there...

And of course it would be nice if VFX were usable for international faxes, but I've had no luck with that. Only works for me for local/national faxes.

Yep, that's my experience too.

Hence we keep just one Telecom line to send/receive faxes and for ADSL.
