Even for On Account customers, the ability to activate/deactivate roaming has now been reinstated:

"Temporary changes from 17 to 27 May 2007 only"

So it is safe to assume that the salesperson was wrong in this case.

I just realised if you're a PrePay user and want roaming (other than AutoRoaming) then Vodafone set you up with a credit card account which would explain why they can't do it. Maybe they should of explained this..or maybe they just forgot to mention it along with all the other services such as TXTaPark. As pointed out though you should be able to get roaming activated as of yesterday.

regarding the activation of global roaming, im on prepay and i had to fill in a form which they would key into their system. There is no $10 charge either for prepay customers to set it up (despite what the website says) and when filling in the form you need photo id (passport or drivers licence) and a credit card.

With all the conflicting statements from the various arms of Vodafone: Web Site / Salesperson / Customer Service Rep. etc, etc. is it any wonder that we -- as their customers -- are a little confused here???

oh crap i didnt even know about auto-roaming until one of the posts... now i have to make sure there is credit on my phone while im in uk for calls and txts, and when im in greece i will only get charged for txts from my credit, the calls and charges etc will come as a bill later on....right???
This is far too confusing :(

Auto-roaming sounds like a bad idea in that case. I just requested Vodafone to charge everything to my credit card before I left and then just had to make sure to pay the Credit Card Bills via Internet Banking once each month while we travelled around Europe. That was a pretty painless way to do it I think and would be my recommendation to you:

Ask Vodafone to switch you from Auto-roaming onto normal Prepay Roaming with all charges billed to your Credit Card.

EDIT: It doesn't sound as though you have a choice. Some countries are Auto-roam and some aren't, what a pain!

Personally I use HOTLINK to top up my wife's prepay mobile and it's definitely the easiest and quickest way that Voda have come up with yet.

Even if you setup PrePay Roaming you will be charged the Auto Roam rates when you're in a country supporting Auto Roaming. Just be careful Vodafone don't double charge you, my girlfriend had this happen on multiple occasions in 2005 despite Vodafone's assurances it wasn't happening so it's anybody's guess it the "problem that doesn't exist" is fixed.

I bet now that the "on account" system has now been upgraded to the same system as the prepay system, The price will also increase for on-account customers too.

To my knowledge Receiving a TXT anywhere in the world is free.

Senders in NZ are charged as though you were still sitting in New Zealand, senders from say the UK (if you were based in the UK too) are charged as normal to send a TXT to your NZ number.

thanks for the info guys. I don't tend to read Vodafone threads all that much, as i'm not an 'active' Vodafone customer at present (except for internet via Ihug)
