I know the options I have with Fritz boxes / PAP boxes but I liked the one device approach. Got too much cabling as is already. But thanks for the responses! I'll see how I go.
I suspect you'd need a HG659 master password again to change the settings. My suspicion is, that Huawei got a bit more inventive at locking down since the HG556a.

I Agree, I hate modems and switches hanging off each other. I got a 659, NAS. Be good if we deploy VOIP over VDSL. But then again there is PSTN just sitting there. Got to keep those old NEAX's in action!!

Convergence dictates that everything is heading towards IP only, so PSTN has got to go eventually. Landlines also are becoming irrelevant too as mobile displaces landline connections. I can't help but wonder if fixed broadband connections are just a transient technology to be replaced entirely by mobile data in a few years?

Definitely. If you look at the speeds that wireless can now reach it well surpasses cable based comms. It's just that the tech & policy is lagging a bit. I mean LTE could well replace a lot of what we have as landline today. But honestly I persoanlly like copper and cable. It's easy, tried and tested and just works.

Nope. I don't think wireless will replace fixed line for the foreseeable future. If the whole country switched to mobile data overnight the cell network would grind to a halt. There simply isn't enough wireless bandwidth to go around.

Since the SIP settings are locked down on the HG659, has anyone tried using these new routers with voip phones directly or an ATA to confirm its all good with their 2TAlk accounts? I'm a bit hesitant to change to VDSL if it means losing my VOIP calling.

Happy to invest in a decent voip wireless phone (potentially looking at the gigaset models) if I need to though. Just keen to hear from anyone who has got it working already.

I am on Gigaset so can let you know next week. I can't see any reason why the HG659 should have issues with SIP. I too am disappointed I have to hang the old HG556 off the 659 to support our alarm dial out via the inbuilt ATA.

We are scheduled for the 5th for swap to DSL.

HG659 is here and I plugged it into the ADSL but it is no go on ADSL for some reason. It connects via ADSL but doesn't seem to authorise.

Back to the Hg556 till next week.

I agree, I'm not sure it would even be possible with existing technology. Hence why I said 'eventually'. Never know what new technology is around the corner. I heard Samsung was experimenting with 1Gbps+ 5G technology.

An update will be great thanks Hairy1. So just to confirm, you are using the LAN port with your gigaset, and not the telephone port on the 556? I know that some gigasets have both voip and normal telephone functionality.

As advised by one of my buddies today a deployed Cat4 4G network in NZ with 1 million users on load will deliver around 100Mbps. It is a possibility but its a FINITE resource.

Nope. I am completely SIP on 2talk. The Analog port is not used on the Gigaset. My setup is:

Hg556 -> VOIP port on HG556 to Alarm for remote dial

Hg556 -> Ethernet -> Gigaset for all home cordless phones.

Does your buddy know what the cost of deploying a Cat 4 network with a million users is? Looking at the RBI prices it may be possible but would be cost prohibitive... The Government has even subsidized the RBI...
