If they had 100% like the other plan it would be good enough, at least for me. If I needed/wanted 500GB then obviously would go to next plan up, but not the case.

Firstly why do you expect to be given something for free? It's not like you 'deserve' to be given a free double your data upgrade any more than someone who was paying more per month anyway. They have targeted the 250GB user base as you'll fine only a small percentage will be using 250GB or more, so they can safely double the data to make them look competitive in the market, knowing that it's hardly going to be used and thus cost them very little.

It's a similar principal to issuing vouchers, companies know that not everyone remembers to use them in time, but it makes you feel good when you receive it.

Migrations happen in blocks. I am not aware of any further changes but given the movements already i think the 150GB plans might see it be bumped up.

30-80-150-500
or
80-150-250-500

This is great news - well done Vodafone. I guess someone was listening when we called out Vodafone on the NZ Tech Podcast recently for the cost of 'data doubling' going from around $30 to $250 on the 250GB plan. Just doubling the data for everyone on the 250GB plan solves that issue rather nicely.

You may be right that this is a "red herring" in the sense that most people in the 250GB plan may not be using 250GB at all and going to 500GB will be seen as a "we have a large plan" without lots of people actually using it.

I do not expect to be given something for free though. If people on 250GB plan get 100% increase then it's not something special for people in other large plans to see a similar increase. Didn't people on 250GB get "something for free"? If the only reason they got that was really the "they won't use it all" then we're back to the times of the "confusion in marketing" advocated by Theresa Gathung (who is now chairman of SPCA Wellington amongst other things).

Even if we have ours doubled from 150GB to 300GB we wouldn't use it all. Most months we are way below 150GB anyway, with the odd months where we go over by a few blocks. So, not, it's a "free things" as your logic would still apply here.

There is no such thing as a free lunch - or free data.
You could argue that the Entertain 250GB plan was overpriced, compared with the "heavy user" plans of other ISPs.
Doubling the data cap for the first time gives a useful amount of data for heavy users such as myself, and it makes the price more competitive.
I don't intend to waste any of the data that I have paid for :)
If you need less than 250GB, just choose another plan.
