That's what I wanted confirmed, that the actual overhead is around the 20% mark. So everyone seeing the same thing?

its about 15%.. http://pflog.net/dsl_overhead/ worth a bit of a read if your interested though. essentially, there is a best/worst case for how much the overhead affects you.

for me, i sync at 60/10 and speedtest to about 56.2/9.7.

as your connection gets faster, the overhead is less noticeable, but it can also be a bit larger..

Please do not speedtest over WiFi either this should only be done via LAN

I have removed the filter (naked so not needed) and cut all the wires to unused extensions (all but the Modem). All this seems to have made zero difference (the attainable rate went up but the Rate only marginally). I also tuned MTU and other minor things.

And what else can improve my speed? Go to a Draytek? Install a master filter? Or is Vodafone actually throttling ADSL?

Have you run a complete new cable from ETP to (new) xDSL jack-point?

I am thinking about re-wiring but it will only save me about 5m of cable. The cable in there looks like fairly new Cat 3. One thing I want to do long term (to get Cable/fibre) is run ethernet down to the property border and terminate there (about 50-60m). Thing is that is a lot of digging and cost. Might even be cheaper to do that with directional Wifi.

@Johnr: The hg556a firmware already was V100R001C12B037 so I did nothing to change that. Thanks for the tip anyway.

I just discovered that the rail our cable car runs on is actually hollow so I can run cables for africa in there. I guess I can fit about 200 Cat 6 cables in there ;-) so I'll run coax, Cat6 Outdoor and fibre and install a cabinet as close as I can get to the street. So there is still hope for high speed internet!

I just want to make sure I got all I need down there I have coax lying around anyway. Also depends on total price I guess. I have fibre termination on my router now so I could run fibre directly in there.

I am not quite sure if you know what you plan on doing and if its practical. You want to install your own cabinet? Got $150,000 spare or something?

You cant just "terminate" fibre or coax at the curb and then hang your own stuff off the back of it. No one will let you do that. You could make a shed at the end of your driveway and house CPE in there and run it back to your network at home.
