I actually came across this on WSJ and good to see discussion around it. But I can imagine the likes of certain individuals in the industry would like to 'close this immediately and move along, nothing to see here'

Then again, isn't this almost expected? I had to be somebody. Or would people rather huawei?

Just because we are not surprised about this does not make it right and does not mean that we should not seek to have this invasion of our privacy reversed.

We have privacy rights in NZ, so the 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' argument is irrelevant to the conversation.

If the politicians bring out this argument, the appropriate response IMHO is 'OK so you won't have a problem if we monitor your phone calls and internet activity?'. All of a sudden privacy becomes important to them.

I'm with Dynamic on this I'm pretty damn sure I never gave the govt any authority to spy on me willy nilly I do however think that if they needed to then they should be getting a warrant from the courts to do so and should have to supply compelling evidence to support the request for a wire tap warrant

A warrant has always been required for voice LI or accessing of SMS messages.

This "story" has nothing to do with bulk spying. That's why it's not actually news.

I read the entire story and many others.

This story refers to monitoring of individuals. It is very different to mass interception of all calls and traffic for all users, hence my comment that this is not news. Lawful LI has been occurring in NZ for many years.
