Left MTR running for a bit, some of the numbers aren't looking great.

Phone call just now, they could hear me more or less ok, I could hear maybe 5% of what was being said.

This latest set of numbers have horrendous latency Peter!

I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know here... Frown

At one stage a few months after installing Kordia Extend, my connection started dropping out and it got rapidly worse.  After some investigation, it turned out that the wooden pole I had used had twisted slightly, and the antenna was off-beam by a few degrees.  Because my connection path is 36km, a high-gain antenna is used with a pretty narrow beamwidth.  A simple panning exercise up a tall ladder armed with a multimeter overcame the problem and it has never reoccurred since that time (3 years ago).  I assume that the 5 metre pole was green when I bought it, and twisted a little as it dried out.

Your comments about heavy rain and mist causing this type of signal loss and shockingly-high latency make me wonder whether you have sufficient signal for the job i.e. are you working at the limits of the equipment in use?

If so, you will experience heavy degradation every time this type of weather condition occurs, making for a less than satisfactory internet connection.

What does Skynet say about your signal level and error rate?

Do you have sufficient signal strength to have a decent noise margin, or should you be looking at a higher gain antenna to overcome this problem?

The latency is one issue, but the consistency across both the wireless and wired parts of the network inclines me to leave it alone until the packet loss is a bit better. After several centuries of geek I believe quite strongly in fixing one thing at a time. At this point no data is a bigger problem than slow data.

What I find bizarre is that for the majority of the time I can get zip packet loss on the wireless hops, that's the 10.n.n.n part and high single or low double digit losses on the wired hops, that's KCCS a fairly serious provider, the Auckland Peering Exchange and WXC's VOIP home.

But. When I ask for tech support. Well. L R15,NOTMYPROBLEM BASR R14,R15 or something like that, it's been a few years.

Hi Peter,

My engineers have contacted kccs and informed that we believe there are issues,  they are there own company with no direct contracts with WorldxChange so we have no control on how they hand off traffic whatsoever and we had informed them of issues last week even though we have absolutely no direct involvement ourselves ,  your asking us for tech support and we can't fix a problems when it exists in another companies network that we have no working or commercial relationship with, your ISP does.


the reason you see higher losses at the final hops is because those losses have basically already happened, they either
1. Did not get to us or
2. The return did not get to you


This is purely because of the losses being seen in the satlan and kccs connections, your ISP uses these companies to deliver their internet traffic and they need to get on the Job with them,  they have the commercial relationship with upstream not us, we peer at APE and don't have any issues with anyone else, the loss of the packets is occurring before this point.

What has your ISP said over the issue ? , have they contacted FX networks and kccs, have they done anything ??

I totally follow what you're saying Phil. However, I'm just one li'l ol' punter trying to get one li'l ol' problem solved but the core of the problem is pretty well armour plated, so the only path to a solution that I have is to hammer on the armour plating at both ends of the link until someone gets annoyed enough to make the problem go away.

 

But do the maths on these. Are packets dropped on pan.wxnz.net and on the peering exchange node that talks to you. Or are all these reported as dropped because responses were lost by intervening nodes, even though there were no request losses. Are you able to measure dropped responses at the intervening nodes?


These figures aren't unusual, I only had to run MTR a couple of times to get these figures just now.

I still have a little bit of difficulty with the concept that I'm the only WXC customer who apparently loses packets at the APE and at a WXC server because responses are being dropped elsewhere. I must have been rreeaallyy bad in a past life.
