This is the screen you will see once you have connected, As it says you get 6 hours of free Wifi,

There is no cap on how much data you can use AFAIK BUT there is a fair use policy outlined in the T's & C's.
It's not intended for you to spend all 6 hours downloading the internet and hence the network is monitored and managed so it is used for its intended purpose.

the cost of rolling out hundreds of WiFi hotspots would barely make a dent in the investment required in rolling out 4G, so the 'extra' data you would get would be virtually nothing.

There is a reason they (telcos) are doing the WiFi, and that is because it is massively cheaper to offer data (especially large volumes of data) over it.

I've used the Telecom ones and am able to use it from a range of over 20m - so I don't need to sit outside a phonebox. Often there is a cafe nearby I can use (which is exactly what I did over Xmas in Paihia)

Why is mobile data so expensive then? They already own all the equipment, other countries somehow get unlimited and we get a few gb at most which is kinda sad

Plus population density (or lack thereof) and NZ geography

I don't know about you guys but I don't like mobile congestion. In the U.S. their unlimited offerings often have speed caps or the provider has really really congested cell sites, same with Australia too.

Mobile data doesn't cost much and it works well here, providers (especially Telecom) offering free wifi is a big bonus in my books.

Yep, unlimited in the USA is great but then you don't have coverage or when you do it is just so slow you might as well be using GPRS...

Edit: should probably state for the record that I have no knowledge of any plans of expansion :)

I think 1Gb per day is ok, however, it seems to be just a copy of the competitions setup. Perhaps for those people who are on unlimited plans, a higher cap (if one at all) would be good - after all, it really is the same plan, just the point of delivery is different.

Be useful to see then do something with holiday parks/camp grounds as well, not just focus on cities.

Be useful to see then do something with holiday parks/camp grounds as well, not just focus on cities.

The holiday parks make a killing on their WIFI. I doubt they would appreciate telcos offering a competing service at a sensible rate.

In particular, on my regular route to work, the handing over from 3G to Wifi and back to 3G at the Devonport ferry terminal is just completly unreliable and I have to turn off WiFi so it will 'let go' and I can get 3G service.

It seems to be when you are on the fringe of the Wifi range, it wants to favour hanging on to the Wifi connection instead of swapping to 3G.

It probably is hosted from the store but it is available all around the centre and the login is very professional - something that looks better than just a store WiFi really.

Bruhaus have WiFi that you log in via Facebook. I logged in more by accident than anything else the first time.
