It depends on how many people are using your segment, traffic to those servers, etc. To make it consistent try the same server all the time:

hmm would suggest a call to Telstra may be in order. I think they have there own speed test tool which should cut out any external factors.

Ohh well my one never goes above 2000kbs now.... So sad... I think my router might be a problem or maybe the modem

Definitely try out connecting your modem directly to your computer to see if your router is causing the problem - see my previous posts here about problems I had with my router.

How about this...

When I connect through wireless with my Mac... I get this result

Will have to try with a wired one later on today....

Any clues why this has happened? Wireless is fastest than wired cable !!!!

No ideas where bottlenecks are, but it seems that my desktop doesn't have the same speed as my mac. Is it a spywear or Virus? or a programme? I am not sure.

i had that very same problem man, just no real help to fix it, all my network used to get 4mb when i was first connected, (ps3,pc,laptop - wired and wireless) then it was only the ps3(wired) and the lappy (wireless) that could reach 4mb....

now, everything on my network can only get 2mb, sumtimes it starts off at 3mb and works its way down....
i havent tried without a router yet but thats suuuuch as effort so would like see if anyones got any ideas before i have to resort to that..

What plan are you on? I think I will try to close all the application and test it again today..... Will keep you posted, but I think the thing that slows down the internet is P2P app and maybe Xbox or Ps3....

Ive run speed tests on each item on my network,while unplugging the others to see if it was one causing the rest to crap out.theres no spyware/adware/malware on my ps3 and that still only gets 2mb.

its looking like its gotta be hardware or the connection, i dont know why itd be hardware as nothing has changed since i was getting good speeds and i havent talked to telstra about the connection yet as id hate for it to be something simple on my end.

Tonight il try taking the router out and plugging the modem straight into a couple of things.

im currently in the process of changing up plans so it might be good to jsut wait and see what happens when i get 10mb.
i hope im not already supposed to have the 10mb speed as i have the 20gig cap,the lady on the fone when i upgraded implied that i wasnt. (im only paying for the 10gig plan for the month)

I think your one is about right, have you tried connecting your internet directly from your modem?

I have but nothing has changed, so I think the appication in windows and likely to be from windows update F@#% my computer up

Can anyone recommend a wireless router that definitely does connect using encryption and makes full use of a 10Mbps connection?

JonC the following speed tests are over a wifi connection, I'm using a Linksys WRT54G v5 with DDWRT v23 Micro instead of the default firmware. I had issues similar to you when I first received the speed upgrade - I did a hard reset and re-entered all of my settings and it improved vastly - my speeds just keep getting better and better now.

My speeds tend to be a little faster when cabled up, but Outrageous fortune is on..
