Swapping the router may have worked, or whatever else it was has stopped - it's been fine for the last 3 mornings.

Well, that didn't last. We have had several dropouts at various times, and today it's just gone completely off the rails. The modem drops ADSL and re-syncs at a different rate (between 3000 and 18000). Then the phone started to crackle and at one point the dial tone vanished.

After another 46 minutes on the phone with Vodafone and various helpful suggestions "have you tried a different wifi channel?" we now have a tech on the way...

Chorus tech traced the fault to a dodgy extension we don't use any more. I raised the possibility of installing a master splitter, which was apparently going to be difficult due to the current wiring layout. Oh well, at least it's fixed...

Was this extension isolated from the master jack point wiring?

It wasn't, or I assume it wasn't. it's disconnected now.

For whatever reason we had the master jack point in the kitchen, an extension to the master bedroom, and then two extensions from the master bedroom jack point into the other two bedrooms - the router is connected to one, the other wasn't used. The kitchen one has been opened up several times but there's no way to pull any more of the wire through to the socket, or add any more wires as it's thoroughly jammed into the wall.
The wiring is exposed under the house so presumably with enough time and effort it could be redone properly, but we will probably wait for UFB before doing anything else.

The saga continues. During the troubleshooting we were changed to a robust ADSL profile. Once the wiring fault was fixed we reconnected straight away.
This evening I restarted the modem to see if we were back on full speed profile. Yes, back at full speed, but can't get a PPPoA connection. Rang Vodafone - "one of the signals is not connecting". Tech ticket re-opened for Chorus to have another go.
I tried turning the modem off, unplugging, then just for fun I tried a third modem, in the master jack point, with new cables... Still no PPPoA.

Seems like two faults to me, the wiring (now fixed?) and something refusing to reconnect our PPP after it disconnects ... somehow?

This sounds like a classic case of old out dated wiring. These can be the worst because patch jobs cannot be relied on.
Good luck. It sounds like you know what your options are.

So...

Master filter is installed. Tidied up a bunch of other wiring.

ADSL initially synced and PPP didn't connect again, but then it did after about 10 minutes. Not sure if it's improved or not. Sync speed is no different.
