Does anybody know, when you touch down in Australia, does the Vodafone network automatically get selected? If not, will this Vodafone Traveller do it?

The first time we sent a technician to Australia, his phone picked Opus instead of Vodafone (we were told later you need to specifically select Vodafone) and we racked up $350 in roaming bills in two days.

No Vodafone AU is not automatically selected, the network with the strongest signal is.

This new traveler roaming will make sure that doesn't happen again nate as it doesn't matter which network you use the charges are now the same (as long as you opt in to traveler).

Sorry... im not actually sure what trolling is.. i(i know im in IT and should know but i dont..)

but it was a serious question.. i have no idea what telecom charges for their roaming and wondered how it compared.. i know that telecom phones have trouble in europe (gsm / cdma... unless you have a world phone) so i aslso asked about the USA.

i just thought it would be interesting to get a comparison?

I believe it is available on Supa Prepay, not sure about the older plans.

Don't forget Traveller is opt-in - if the pricing doesn't suit then yuo can stay with the existing pricing.

No.

Most phones have an option of manually selecting or automatically selecting a network. Sony Ericsson's also have a preferred list of networks that lets you keep your phone on auto however it will keep your phone on the preferred networks if they are available.

This isn't entirely correct. You can only get Traveller if you select it however the new inbound rates and I believe the new rates in Australia apply to everybody.

Pretty well. I was horrified to see my VFNZ bill after a trip to Canada, with calls in the $9/min range. TNZ was circa $2.40/min.

I think TNZ's alignment with Sprint in North America allows them to have much lower roaming costs (or they just gouge less). VFNZ is incredibly expensive for roaming - I have a VFUK SIM with Passport and that's quite a bit cheaper, even allowing for currency differences.

Can somebody tell me what the costs are for calls within a country while roaming with Traveller? Even the Traveller site doesn't mention this, it only lists the costs for calls back to NZ

Zone 2	UK/Europe	*Standard Home rate per minute plus $2 per minute
Zone 3	North America and Asia Pacific	*Standard Home rate per minute plus $3 per minute
Zone 4	Rest of World	*Standard Home rate per minute plus $5 per minute

It doesn't matter where the call is to the charge is the same for local/intl/back home. Zone Surcharge + home rate.

Sorry, but when I read your post I thought you were just trying to go off topic with a comparison to another operator (which we all know has no roaming to Europe) on a discussion that was purely about the new plans - hence my comment of the question.

I see your question was answered already, and yes Telecom New Zealand can be cheaper in the U.S.

When do these new plans come into effect? While it's definitely simpler overall in terms of the cost structures, I'd be interested to see who will really benefit from this?

I haven't really checked roaming prices for a while since work pays for it but I can imagine that a call which costs $5 plus normal rates qualifies as being cheap. Not to mention the 80c per text, I wonder if this applies to both incoming and outgoing sms?

Does anyone know if there are other Operators who have anything comparable to this? I just wonder how much of a margin they're making on this now. Roaming costs are supposed to cover the costs of routing and terminating the call on the roaming network but with a fixed cost structure I'd assume they're making a margin on it. The question is how much of a margin....

I'm lost for words...

How the hell do Vodafone seriously think people will pay $2 per minute + their normal charge for a national call or call to a UK mobile inside the UK that currently costs them as little as 50c per minute.

Has somebody inside Vodafone NZ lost their marbles? Traveller is the worst deal of all time!

This is could be the changes they recently made to the billing systems?

Bit complex but at least you have the option of sticking with the current pricing (bar Australia and the standard $1 to receive a call)

At least the pricing is streamlined to the same model Telecom Worldmode introduced, and gone are the whole "choosing Vodafone roaming partners" issue that used to plague us, a definate plus.
