timmmay: Why do you need so much data when you're on holiday? The whole point of Fiji is to relax and unplug!

Things like spotify play lists, maps etc.

I would rather have to much than running out when I need it :)

could you get yourself a battery powered hotspot device on a plan of your choosing, then make use of the various ways of getting free calls and txt messages through your smartphone?

Yes this is an attractive option too. I have used a Vodafone or spark mifi in FJ with a 'flashnet' SIM, how does 8GB of data for $25FJD sound? ($18ish NZD) with 30 day expiry. SiM again $20 or $25 from memory. Calls over voip (viber, skype, 2talk) etc acceptable except can be a little unreliable at peak conjestion, usually evening time.

The othe benefit of them is that you can stick them up high somewhere for better reception. Some models can be tricky to get going - having to poke your tongue out at the right angle as you hold the power button down for the right length of time, then waiting for the correct status lights to come on then log into a captive portal ....

Definitely research the model you buy.

Have you been to Fiji before? I've been a half dozen times. It's a really low stress country. Staying in a resort is even easier.
 - Need a map? Just ask someone.
 - Need music? Most resorts have music in the rooms. You could also (gasp!) have some music stored on a device.

I still think ditch the technology, use the phone for emergencies, drink rum by the pool.

mrtoken: So off to fiji for a week,

You might want to check your resort does have voda coverage, the resorts are *generally* well covered, but if you are on a remote island you could struggle. The islands have very good coverage considering population.

Last time I went to Fiji, I didn't use a phone at all.
It didn't hurt a bit.  smile

Thanks guys

The trip is still a couple of months off but just wanted to get things sorted now and not freak out at the airport.

As for not going without a phone, I don't think I could do that.
Have a cat at home so I need to get nightly pictures of him so I know he is fine (I have trained the flatmate to send them to me when I am away).

Sorry to hijack the tread but I am off to Fiji in a couple of weeks and are looking forward to unplugging and just relaxing.

It seems a few here have been to Fiji before so just wondering any tips or tricks you can share. We are staying in a resort at Denarau.

Denarau is easy, plenty of stuff nearby, places to eat, places to get food cheaper, etc. You can go zip lining on the south coast, but it's a few hours drive, not sure I'd bother personally but it was fun. You could go for a cruise to an island for a day or overnight, but from memory it's $80 each way for the ferry to the more distant islands.

Probably best just to enjoy your resort and eat at different places at the area. You could go to the towns or cities but I've never bothered.

Can recomend the South Sea Island cruise, Was around $80fjd per person for the half day IIRC and that includes all you can drink wine and beer / soft drinks & water sports (Snorkling, Kayaking, Going around the reef in their Glass bottomed boat. Well worth it!.
