shouldnt the vodafone site be more clear on that?

all it states is "You can unlock your locked Vodafone NZ mobile so that it will work on another network in NZ"

theres no mention of not working on certain frequencies or not working with certain networks.

now im stuck with a pissy old dude wanting to return it

Nope sorry not the job of Vodafone to point out what bands / technology other networks use,

This is why end users should buy handsets from approved retailers as not all mobile networks are the same

have to say that seems a poor if thats the VF's attitude.

Offering a paid unlocking service but not providing the FULL details seems a bit off. a simple note in the fine print of unlocking of the bands it will work on is all thats needed, ie, VFs bands.

How can any carrier offer support for handsets on a competitors network? VodafoneNZ don't test handsets for compatibility on the Spark network,

i dont expect VF or any telco to offer support. I just expect if a company offers a service, that service works. like providing a service & saying a phone will work on any nz network. any network, means any and all nz networks.

im with VF myself & very happy with them, all my services are with them.

Its just this issue with a sold phone thats not great

it will work on any network if the handset supports the other networks

they cant make the page and say this phone will work on this network and this one wont.

thats your job as a consumer to work that out, you obviously want it unlocked for a reason so thats your responsibility to get it working.

johnr: Saying a handset will work on " any network " is just plain silly, Lets say someone buys it and wants to use it on the verizon network in the US,

well the VF sites says it will work on any nz network - i simply used the info provided on the VF site.

Fine then it will work on the Spark network if the end user moves into the coverage of a Spark 3G 2100Mhz site,

:)

An honest mistake no doubt, but now you are aware an error was made you need to take steps to correct that IMO.  The seller should have done his homework, but was also misled by the statement.

Normally only high-end phones (iPhone, Galaxy S4/5/6 etc) have the capability to work on any NZ network.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

im happy to sort it out, i just wanted help here to check up beforehand. I ma have misled the buyer, by accident, but im not to know when the info on VF is not clear, simply noting the VF frequency on that unlocking web page would a lot more helpful.
when i unlocked it it worked fine for one with mt 2D sim. Not like i had a spark sim to test. spark is a dirty word! lol

anyways,

cheers for the info & banter guys

Banter is good maybe you could advise the new end user of the handset to move into Auckland CBD

The handset is unlocked for any network that supports the correct bands / technology

:)

Following this discussion I suggested a change to the unlock info page on our site to help make it clearer. The online content team have reviewed it and it's now live.

On http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/mobile-phones/unlock/ in the "Important things to know" section this point has been added:
"We cannot guarantee that an unlocked mobile phone will be compatible with another specific network. This is because different networks may use different technologies and frequencies. Please check compatibility requirements with the destination network provider."
