Thanks for all the comments. Chorus guy arrived after dark tonight and took a look. Tested at the ETP and confirmed that the problem was on the network, not internally. Went to trace the line and left a message to say there is an issue affecting the whole cabinet and that he would resolve it tomorrow. Fingers crossed it sorts out the VDSL speed issues as well...

Sorry for lack of update, been out of town... 

Phoneline seems to be working better now, but VDSL performance has actually gotten worse...

Modem still shows max line speeds of 14.3 / 0.5 but Speedtest results have degraded from the same as max line speeds to 9 / 0.4

I walked the line over the weekend, direct path to the Mt Albert exchange is 680m. But the tech thinks the line goes out of my street to a small cabinet (don't think it has equipment in it, just connectors) the wrong way up New North road before looping back to the exchange - making it more like 960m once you include the loop.

Is such poor performance expected over this distance? 

I tried to check expected speeds on this calculator, http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php

But, my modem DSL stats show attenuation as 0 ?????

Copper does not always run direct to the exchange / cabinet, It can run up and down the same street on the other side of the road

It isn't unusual for phone lines to not take a direct route. My understanding a  lot of it has to do with the infrastructure being designed pre-xDSL.
At 960m I would not expect an optimal VDSL experience and I would expect your attenuation to be higher than 0.




Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

Thanks guys - is there any way to force the Voda-supplied Huawei HG659 to tell me the line attenuation in dB instead of showing zero?

Request a move back to ADSL the modem you have can be configured to support ADSL2+

The attenuation figure is a bug that exists in the HG659, Im somewhat surprised Vodafone still haven't looked at patching it along with the other issues with that firmware.... 

@alphabet as painful as it is, if you want to know your actual attenuation figure, you need to call Vodafone and ask them to check from their side.

Thanks all, looks like a fall-back to ADSL2+ is on the cards then, glad to hear a modem change will not be required.

First I'll wait to hear if VodafoneDylan finds out anything from the faults team as he offered above. (VodaDylan - I PMed you my account details in case it helps.)

We're going to lodge another fault to Chorus and ask them to try and find out what is causing the slow upload as that's the current obvious issue. If that's fixed hopefully it will also help the download speed too. It won't be truck rolled (no request for a person in a van like with faults like no dial tone etc) and could take a couple of days for them to examine it. Will let you know when I know more.

My experience with VDSL connections provisioned on too high of an attenuation but not so high that it doesn't stop working altogether is you tend to get a reduced download speed but still an increase in upload speed. While you may still  be best of reverting to ADSL it is good that Dylan has faults checking the upload speed as that may be a separate issue.

P.S. I forgot about that modem bug. I guess it's a side affect of not being in front line support anymore.
