I opened the case but the board layout and pinout is different in my v7 than the instructions on the Net that I could find which are for v5 or less.

I tried all the different methods on the net and many hrs of trying to tcftp the binary image to it.

We can run extra cable but it means getting anothe cable modem from TCL

I will continue looking for a v7 instructions for shorting the pins

You can run cat5 from a non wireless router like the Edimax BR-6104K http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=8076199. These appear to work fine on TCL cable connections where other routers have failed.

You could RMA the WRT54G, RMA customer service 0800 449094, tech support 0800 080015.

WRT54GL is available from ascent http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=345759 for $154.

I got the Edimax BR-6104K and it works great. The instructions to install were not quite right for TCL cable modems but I figured out OK. (not automatic DNS - add TCL DNS addresses and configure through static address for the WAN)
I think is was an Ascent return as I had to restore to factory defaults- it had some weird address configured in it.

I tried it out on my PC before installing it on the TCL cable modem at the nieces house and I have to say the TCL cable connection was appreciably faster in my browser - both Firefox and Opera. Screens loaded real fast liske instant especially those with multiple ads. In fact so much better I am considering getting one myself just because of that reason. Don't know why that is?

I have given up on the WRT54G - I am not going to waste anymore time on it. If I had spare time I would try to revive it with a JTAG cable but my soldering skills are not the best. It will go in the attic with the other gear. On the other hand I l have learnt a lot about networks in the PC.

I recently upgraded my Linksys WRT54G to DD-WRT. I found tftp would only work if I set the network connection on the PC end to 10mb. This handy tip is somewhere on the DD-WRT site. Once I did that the tftp worked first time. You might be able to use this to resurrect the box and sell it on trademe!

I tried the 10mb tip after looking at the DD-WRT site but still got time outs all the time I tried to send the file although the occasional answer with a ping so it is not entirely dead just not willing to accept the bin.
