Just like how you don't own the sky dish on your roof, but people still use it for freeview...

Slightly different.  The Sky dish isn't connected direct to Skys network.. whereas TCL's cable is.

I used a splitter to take the free channels to my TV, and when the TC guy came .. he just said I needed a better quality splitter when he saw it and so replaced it for me.

Nothing about illegalities .. I guess it depends on who visits your house, and whether they wish to treat you as a customer or villain.

It's like comparing listening to the Radio (Sky) to connecting to the National Grid (TCL)... That being said I did ask Sky to remove the dish from the house I moved into after the sale of the house, they refused, IANAL but to me that is abandonment, hence I own the dish as it was sold as a chattle!.

It would be nice if TCL would let users connect up their own end-points so that customers were able to move the STB / Cable Modem between different rooms with ease, or if they are doing a full re-wire allow customers to run their own cable and have a splitter that they supply and run from the POP on the side of the house. However I also understand that 99.9% of all punters have no idea of RF interferance and the problems that can cause to others in the same node, that being said getting Quad Sheilded Coax is tough to track down at a reasonable price (ie less than $1 per meter!).

Here is an Idea - The Analogue output from the STB - take that out - split that signal and send it to your TV's it will already include those free to air chanels as that output also has a passthrough from the analogue aerial input. Obviously it is designed to let you watch ch1 ch2.... and so on. without having to be on AV channels. and this ofcourse would be sourcing from the STB... :D plus you will also be able to watch the Sky chanell you are watching on the STB at the time on the other TV's

From what I remember, the coax output from the STB only has the one channel that is being viewed, instead of all of the free to air channels and the one decrypted channel.

To actually have such groundbreaking features as Picture-in-Picture work on TCL's network, you have to split off before the STB.

My experiance is that for Analogue STB's you are correct. It only shows the one channel that the STB is set to however the digital boxes have the channel that the STB is set to and also all the FTA channels. All you have to do is tune them in. I am using that as the feed to my DVD recorder.

Oooh!  Nice that they fixed that.  I'm still on analog though. :)  I don't feel like paying an extra $5/month for digital until they get the quality/connections sorted outl. :)

Quality is already sorted on some channels. Have to wait another week or so for the rest to be sorted. Then is it just down to what they are sent by Sky.

Connections is still the bug bear. Only on S-video and then composite. Of course you could spend some money with Bartender and buy one of his boxes that have component out.

You can do what ever you want from the output of the decoder. But if you cut into an input feed and bypass the decoder you run the risk of getting into lots of trouble although free to air feeds are free the signal that TCL transmit through there cable is not free and if you plug into this cable and a fault occurs it has the potential to affect the TCL system.

Pretty much. If they won't come and remove their property, then its pretty much yours - though this would not apply to everything in this world (Pylons on farms etc).

hence I own the dish as it was sold as a chattle!.

You can't legally sell (or buy) something as a chattel if you do not own it. Just because it is on the property at time of sale, does not transfer legal title to the new owner - as it was not the old owners item to sell.

I get your general point and agree with you though.

I have just seen a number of times the dish listed as a chattel when buying houses...
It also doesn't mean that you can't realign the dish from D1 to D2 so the neighbours can pick up all the Greek/other foreign language stuff using their ex-sky dish when they dump Sky and move to TCL Cable. :) I am sure sky would be very happy if every house in NZ had a sky dish on it... I would be kinda happy with that as well :)
I do however think we all agree that re-using the sky dish up is one thing as it won't affect anyone else. Hooking into TCL's cable network can have major implications for you and your neighbors also on TCL cable if you don't obey the rules as stipulated by TCL.

Off topic, but,

I do know of one dear soul, who had a major pylon on his property, it carries DC from Benmore, and after the deregulation thing many land owners wanted (and finally got) compensation for easments. However this chap was having trouble with that, and as he was a civil contractor he got one of his motorscrapers and when around and around the pylon (which already was ona bit of a hill) until it was sitting on an island of dirt with a 20-30ft vertical bank all the way around. I seem to remember the saga dragged on and on and was eventually sorted, and cost Transpower a bom to sort out the access again.
