I would love to hear from the OP, as to exactly why Vodafone sucks, so far we have what seems to be a very poorly thought out post.

Is that because they keep waving them around trying to get signal. Or every 5 minutes they loose all signal and you get a lot of people saying 'hello, can you hear me? Hello!!?!?'

By the way, it that spinning cell site in Wellington really meant to spin off the building?

Telecom's flexi plan and $10 txt are great plans but I wouldn't go as far as calling Vodafone a "vodafone is cheap and nasty compan"y -or- "their plans are the most nasties of seen in a long, long time"

or wos thet mearnt to be "vfn r a chp n r sti cumpny" "thr pls r th mst nsty i c lng tym" LOL OMFG.

sbiddle: Vodafone is losing out big time in the marketplace with no Prepay TXT plan offering TXT's to both networks. You simply can't afford to be on Vodafone Prepay if you know people on Telecom who you TXT frequently. I just fail to understand why Vodafone haven't made TXT600 (or a customised TXT plan) available on PrePay, Vodafone used to be the cool network for young people, now so many have moved to Telecom that their friends all have as well primarily because of the TXT plans.

When was the last time you saw a boy racer car with "offerz 021xxxxxxx" on the back? All you ever see are 027 numbers and since you can't port to Vodafone Prepay you can be assured they are all Telecom connections.

I agree and disagree here. For once, I sort of agree with Econet / NZ Communications. On net deals can be viewed as anti competitive and they in this case encourage existing customers to get their contacts to switch networks, so they can take advantage of the on net deals. How ever, I do believe they have a place, but I think it is constructive for all if they are positioned in the market with an alterative, that does not differentiate when calling off or on net.

So back your post sbiddle, I do think in the prepaid market Voda seems to be making a come back, although the total market share may not be showing this? As to not affording to be with Vodafone, I often hear of people on Vodafone who just refuse to txt Telecom numbers because it's going to cost them 20cents, and it this soft of situation that needs to be discouraged thought alterative offers IMHO (such as TXT600).

Just my two cents

Actually, from what I know...

Asians = Vast majority on Vodafone, with cheap and cool GSM phones from overseas...
Teens = Around 70-75% on Vodafone..... "Cause I don't want that lousy sanyo on Telecom".....
Adults (the business phones) = Telecom.... Business plans, maybe?
Adults (the remainder) = About 60-40, Vodafone-Telecom...
Oldies = ???

It would vary (particularly in the teen group as $10 text is quite popular), but for migrants or people who travel a lot, GSM is definitely a popular choice.

Nothing like arriving in the country and slipping in a local sim card...

Telecom must have a hell of a lot of business connections then, because last time I checked the market was split about 48 (Telecom) / 52 (Vodafone), with a trend over the last few years back towards Telecom.

I don't think that market segment is particularly lucrative for the telcos. It always amuses me when kids like the originator of this thread talk about dropping a particular telco as if they think the telco cares, because the reality is that we're talking about a group of users who do very little beyond sending text messages. Sure, they might download the odd ringtone or game which are high margin products but they still don't deliver a decent ARPU to the telco.

To continue the theme of spotting different handsets out on the street, I notice on my regular bus that all of the 13-20 year olds have Telecom and in the 20-30 age group it's roughly a 70/30 split in favour of Vodafone. Since 20-somethings have much, much higher disposable incomes than teenagers do, I'm not convinced that Vodafone are losing out here.

BTW, Boost text was 1000 texts, it has been 2000 texts since I started back in mobiles, and I reckon quite a few 'oldies', as you put it, are on Onebill... Thank goodness most of them don't text. I invite my kids for a free feed every Sunday night and none of them have trouble telling me they'll be there from their Vodafones! Except last night. Seems there was a bit of an outage in town. But it's all good now.
