Not really discrimination, just weird. Seems strange to block out a whole bunch of people because they were born before 1991 (now, that makes me feel old - that was my first year of Uni...)

Was one of the reasons I left Vodafone. Seems like they valued everyone except normal pay monthly customers. Pre-pay plans get roll over, vodafone x get cheap data - nothing special for run of the mill $40 - $50 plans.

I don't really know the advantage of monthly plans these days, they are maybe more suited for businesses. Prepay to me has always been the way to go, even though traditionally the rates have been higher. But if someone does feel they are being discriminated, they can make an inquiry to the Higher Rights Commission (think that is the organisation that deals with this sort of thing) to see what they say. Age discrimination is tricky, as there are things in the welfare system that benefit people of certain ages. but these tend to be written into legislation, and some haven't been tested in court. Quite a bit of interesting info on the Human rights website. If I was a business I think I would not do special offers excluding people of certain ages. I do think NZ is a bit ageist as it is, as soon as people hit 60 they are seen as old. Funnily enough , in the US, many of the president hopefuls are in their 70's or close to it. But in NZ, we have hardly anyone of that sort of age in politics. Also look at the NZ media, the older people don't tend to front things like the news, and the oldest person that does is probably only 60, yet in the US there are many elderly players. Older people do have a lot of experience and hardworking, and is why companies such as Bunnings seem to prefer to hire them instore, certainly from my experience they provide a better customer service and go out of their way to help more.

Prepay wouldn't work for me, I like having the minutes/texts/data on my plan (which isn't available on Prepay).

It is unlawful to refuse to supply goods, services or facilities, or to provide them on less favourable terms or conditions, because of someone’s age. The definition of facilities includes banking, insurance, grants, loans and credit or finance.
Note: It is not unlawful to provide goods, services or facilities at a reduced rate to people of a particular age.

Check your privilege old folks..

Insurance premiums are based on crash statistics and actual data. Just as driving a certain model of car, or making modifications to a car can affect premiums.

This is quite different to pricing of mobile plans which are usually set by marketing teams as opposed to mathematicians.

It's another exception:

The provision of institutional accommodation, for example, a retirement village.
