I'm deciding on a Prepay network for my mother, who lives in a rural town.  I had a 2 degrees phone with me as well as my usual Skinny one while visiting her recently, and noticed that in the places where 2 degrees don't have coverage, which is almost everywhere in Southland, Skinny had lower signal strength and data speeds.  This was especially noticeable off the beaten track.  How things change ...

I'll probably go with Vodafone, as her town is on the list of places where 2 degrees are putting in their own coverage, and that will probably screw things up.

Yes, that's what I've signed up to.  But now Vodafone won't let me top up even though I've registered the number with My Vodafone.  Looks like some things don't change.

Off to buy a Skinny SIM.

Ive had many issues with my vodafone and topups. I guess it is a magnet for scum with stolen card numbers so that is why they are so anal about it.

I had hassles with a new sim from them and topping up and registering on my vodafone. I did the register and topped it up before I had done one of those "call" things that strange green app does. That apparantly screws up their system as I had not chosen some 4 digit number thing when I called customer service (on a different phone) it was a strange call because they claimed that number didnt exist or some crap.

Then when I registerd with my vodafone it wouldnt accept my email address because it was already in use (good work letting the world know that vodafone) so I registered with a + and something else on it, as anyone who uses gmail is probably well familiar with doing. That screwed up their system a second time.

So yeah, not much changes with vodafones online stuff. Login form on the website is still a piece of crap that had problems autofilling, but someone told me to just submit nothing, then you get a second page with a non disappearing form that does work properly to autofill.

I assume so, as I bought the SIM 2 months' ago.  And surely you couldn't register the number if it wasn't active?

Yes, I expected that Vodafone would have improved their online experience from 5+ years ago when both of our children had Prepay accounts.

Safer with Skinny as I'll be looking after the account remotely.  Plus I can either turn off notifications completely, or have them go to an email instead.  Nice.

You have not called 777 and actually activated the Prepay connection, You can stop blaming the carrier

Yes, I've just checked the instructions with the SIM and it does say to do that.  Oops.  I suppose I'm used to 2 Degrees and Skinny, which don't require manual activation.  A message when I registered the number with My Vodafone would have been helpful.  Or maybe the app could have told me ...

The whole expecting to make a phone call thing stinks.

I had huge hassle with a 3g hotspot since I can SMS thru the web interface but to get a new prepay sim working in it needs a phone call. Hotspot took a giant sim and no one had a phone that took one until they remembered about one of the kids old junk phones that had no charge at all in it.

Not as much fun as trying to activate prepay SIMs a few years ago when visiting Australia.  I was at the V8 race at Bathurst with my son, and he gave his address as 1 Conrod Straight.  Apparently that is an actual address, as the track is a public road!

Did the test cover all aspects of their service, or just the speed alone?
