This is just madness.... to outsource someone who has been such a part of the brand... so much personal time spent helping people on the forums.

Voda must have other roles they could offer John to keep his institutional knowledge?????

Come on Voda...

In view of my recent disappointing experience with "FibreX", VDSL might be faster.  undecided

I am seriously considering making the switch to VDSL myself.

coffeebaron: Really sad to hear of his departing. 17 years service. A big loss to Vodafone NZ.

how come you have geekzonemail email? do i have one too?

Off topic, but... Many years ago we could have Microsoft Custom Domains with Microsoft Hotmail. I created geekzonemail back then and Geekzone users could create accounts. It works just like outlook.com or hotmail.com these as a full Microsoft account. Microsoft is no longer offering the Custom Domains service and accounts can no longer be created - whoever got one is in, whoever missed, missed.

Thats crazy, such a silly thing for them to do. Lucky score for whichever company snaps that talented man up first though!
All the best for your future ventures John if you see this :-)

Outsourcing does have huge benefits, cost wise. But you don't outsource the glue

While I've only met a handful of other people in the same area when I've been at VF with John it's safe to say they're an incredibly specialised part of the business who pretty much do keep a huge amount of backend stuff working. Lose all that knowledge overnight and you have to start factoring in risk to a business when the knowledge is gone, all to save a few $$ by outsourcing to India.

I agree. My point was you can outsource standard tasks, but you cannot outsource the knowledge such as John's, as in the glue

Sad news about John Reader I have always appreciated his very helpful comments and hope he gets a great new job which is even better than the one he has had at Vodafone.

Maybe Peter Reader (a relative?) can help get him a job through his connections, perhaps even at Geekzone.

All the best John.

Hopefully someone from the likes of 2degrees or Spark is reading and has a job offer already in draft (on the assumption he would stay in the telco industry)

Thankfully for John, he will not likely have ANY difficulty finding another role, given his skills and experience.

It's a shame they didn't return some of the loyalty I know he showed them over the years.
