I'm really surprised VF have enabled this without offering the ability to have an ACL on the device at the same time.

I am told you can limit to a SIM - broadband help desk should be able to do it.

Are you not on a all you can eat plan...somehow I can't imagine you on a 80MB plan

I don't mind the idea of a few users using my connection for cell service voice/text where it's already dicey. I'd imagine everything is encapsulated so there's no issue with what a users does on a 3G session over it.

The only draw back to me is 3G Data session bandwidth. That I would rather restrict. I can easily set a bandwidth queue and rate on the port I would connect it to, but that might screw everything up if a 3G Data session has the same or no priority over voice sessions. I'm guessing voice will be set for some kind of priority over data though. It'd be silly not to.

Trial and error I guess, the fun part of learning a new piece of tech in the man cave.

I quite often rent a friends place in Lowburn Central Otago. He has no cell coverage but has pretty good (Spark) ADSL.

I am on Vodafone cell with my work phone, and I now have good coverage at home. I know where my suresignal that is sitting on shelf gathering dust is going to be going very shortly...

I wonder if the Sure Signal prioritises Voice/TXT over Data sessions incase someone like the neighbour switches on a 3G Data session. Or limits the amount of bitrate the user can access via 3G.

Except I'm guessing they share a common VPN back to VF over IP that encapsulates everything, the circuit and packet switched stuff from VF. So there would have to be prioritisation going on inside the box otherwise I'd imagine it all gets jumbled together over the VPN and the 3G session could try to take way more bandwidth than is available for the VPN, ie: when you have 1-2Mbps ADSL (as recommended) but phones trying to use much higher 3G data speeds.

Once VPN packets start to queue/buffer up in this case, I wonder how the voice session stands up. Unless the unit has a fixed bandwidth for it's VPN pipe it won't go over, then deducts the bandwidth needed for voice sessions accordingly from any 3G data session also on that same VPN pipe.

If there is prioritisation going inside the box for the VPN pipe, this would be a way to artificially control the 3G data bandwidth the box gets by just port rating the Sure Signal to 1Mbps on my Mikrotik router. But if that mucks up voice calls as well then that would be ugly.

First cell capacity itself, as mentioned.

Second, even though I am not on a 80GB plan I rather not be an access point for other people.

We want to roll them out to our customers at beach villages, but the problem is others connecting on and using our customer's data in the offpeak, or having more than 8 neighbours' phones connect and not let our customers own phone back on when they come in after fishing.

Oooh, I am going to try ring VF tomorrow and ask - our holiday home in Taupo has no cell phone reception apart from our SureSignal, and our neighbours love it! (And we don't get unlimited plans up there!)

I wonder if I can load upwards of 15 SIM numbers? I.E family connections.

Also, VF have been allowing SureSignal access outside their network for a while. We had another SureSignal device running over a Spark UFB connection.

VF just had to know the static IP address, and their network guys loaded it into the firewall.

The VF suresignal and mobile teams had not heard of this service before. So they have escalated this up to tier 2 technical support, and will call me with the outcome.

They also didn't know that the service could be used on other ISPs, despite the suresignal FAQs referring to it, and my own experience with using Suresignal on Spark.

Do you have any specific helpdesk contact number I should be calling?
