Gowifi seems to be having a promotional launch for a new range of Grandstream products at the moment. No idea what they're like. If you ask him nicely, you might be able to convince @michaelmurfy (aka Gowifi's #1 customer) to review a shiny new wireless networking product.

Just out of interest - would this cause any Double NAT issues with a Vodafone Huawei HG659?

Interested in starting small with a Ubiquiti AP off of a HG659. Is it just simply turning off the wifi broadcast on the Vodafone router?

Thanks all for the replies.

FWIW I went with a separate wifi AP and disabled the wifi on the router. AP installed in the ceiling and works like a champ:

No. Those things are AP's. They don't have router function. No router = no NAT.

I have two APs hanging off a HG659 right now. I disabled the Wifi on the HG659 entirely (cf. just turning off the SSID broadcast), but even that isn't necessary. Once the AP is configured (which is probably more work than it is configuring the router) you basically just need to plug it in and it will work.

I called today to cancel my TV service since I hardly watch it now. The retention team offered me an upgrade to FibreX (currently on a legacy 100/10 plan) for $109.

I am tempted but I need my own router. I currently use a Asus RT-AC66U which works fine for me and enables me to write routing rules to support international TV streaming services :-)

Is this router going to be suitable for Fiberx and fast enough?

So you are on the old cable network? I'd 99% say yes it will do fine for fibre if/when you eventually get it.

BTW, is fibreX really any better than the cable service? I certainly wouldnt be interested to pay for such an upgrade myself as I'd question you'd get any significant noticable improvement for the $s?

In most if not all cases FibreX plans are actually cheaper than the old cable service.

A few questions.

1. Fibrex is cheaper than my legacy cable ($109 vs $129 for same unlimited data but now Gb versus 100Mb)

2. Chorus has just put fibre on my street. Maybe I should move to that? My only concern is I live down a subdivided section. Years ago when I had cable installed TelstraClear ran conduit attached to a fence down a driveway to my house, then under the driveway to my house and then some inconspicuous conduit on the side of the house. For fibre the Downer guys said Chorus could possibly use the same conduit (don't know) or run their own and then again run under the driveway to my house. I guess I have to ask.

3. Can I configure the AC66U for VLAN? I can't see any settings in the router but they could be renamed something different.

fibre seems more like $80 a month than 109 so if you have its its a better deal, mor elike they are trying to lock you in, they are ba****ds like that.

I've found FibreX to be significantly improved over the last month to six weeks. But there are still some problems being reported. You might get a better/faster/cheaper service for less than legacy (DOCSIS3.0) cable, but it's not guaranteed. If you have the option of UFB, I think the orthodox advice that UFB > HFC still very much applies.

Good point about fibre > fibrex > cable. Downer just ran fibre down my street and since I am ditching TV I don't really need the cable anymore. Looking at the UFB providers out there, Bigpipe seems like a good choice. They even have a guide on how to connect using an Asus RT-AC66U which is what I have and they seem to have the fastest plans.

The fibre is so new that their address checker doesn't show it yet but that could be Chorus not yet updating their database.

Or it maybe the fibre will not be activated for years. We have fibre running down the street outside our club and want the speed to do video streaming for an international event in 2019 we are told no.
