Such a shame that Vodafone NZ's infrastructure is so crap that even a phone created for Jesus himself will not be able to compensate :-(

OK SO I'm just being bitter over the poor experiences I've had so far as a VF customer ... I'm sure things couldn't get any worse could they ?  Afterall we've had the billing upgrade from hell .. what worse experiences could we have ?

I was thinking the same thing, but Vodafone Live is a WAP service.. and Safari Mobile isnt a WAP browser.. so there wouldn't be much point custumizing it for Vodafone Live

Interesting announcement of this in the Sydney Morning Herald (article link)...
SMH: The carrier would not say whether the agreement signed between it and Apple was exclusive, however, it is understood Telstra and Optus will also offer the device.
Does this mean there's still hope for the other NZ providers?

Interesting, according to SMH, the deal in Australia at least may not be exclusive, with other carriers such as Telstra and Optus possibly offer the iphone, alongside an official unlocked version from the Australian Apple store.

Am I missing something here?

Where and when did they confirm its going to have 3G capabilities?

I watched the 6pm news and saw it announced there, but that was just to say that the Vodafone was going to supply the iPhone...not a 3G version?

Other than much speculation, Apple has not announced or released a 3G version of the iPhone?

And then this brings in a whole host of questions...
- How locked down is the device going to be with Vodafone firmware?....being thats one of the main attractions of the iPhone, its software.
- What about iTunes...is that going to be available, in competition with the Vodafone music store?
- If it is 3G, will it have video calling?

If Steve Jobs reveals 3G iPhone this WWDC, I think Vodafone will bring them too

Correct, Vodafone did not say it is the 3G iPhone.

As for video calling, is anyone really going to miss the feature if the iPhone doesn't support it?

Me.

I use it extensively (or use to)

I thought it would have made sense, that if a phone has 3G capabilities, and has a camera, it should naturally (and logically)  support video calling?

Its the main reason I use Vodafone, and stay, is video calling...but with Telecom's new network...well...see what happens

But I have always wanted the iPhone, but the lack of 3G support and video calling are whats held me back.

Correct, Vodafone did not say it is the 3G iPhone.

Thats what I thought.

That being the case, sbiddle, ya should retitle this thread to: Vodafone NZ to get the iPhone! (3g?)

Looking at the list of countries (Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, etc) in the Vodafone announcement I strongly suspect it will be the 2G version. Apple is more likely to offer the 3G version to a exclusive service provider in US, like AT&T.

After all the majority of iPhone revenue come from exclusivity to a single network and revenue sharing monthly contracts, as opposed to selling handsets like nokia.

Wow, I never would have guessed it would go that way.  I think I need to hide
out for a couple of weeks and dodge the people that I owe money.

I hate it when they do a gloating dance in front of my desk.

Agreed. However, I wonder if this means we will see Vodafone offering EDGE if it is the 2G iPhone?

Paul, you seem to have gone media shy on us re 2G Vs 3G? Wink

Why would Vodafone be interested in selling the GSM iPhone? It's a dog! :-)

There are severe product shortages affecting the current GSM iPhones - it's almost as though Apple have sold all their stock and have no more since the expectation is the 3G phone will be announced next month with a August launch.

The only real unanswered question is what chipset the new phone will have. Rumors are that it is a quad band GSM + tri band UMTS handset available in two models (900+1700+1900+2100 and a 850+1700+1900+2100), in which case it really will be a must have toy when combined with Vodafone's 900Mhz 3G network.

But who am I to be telling you this? I'm a nobody and certainly have not been told anything by anybody at Vodafone NZ. Infact when I told a few people I know from Vodafone NZ on Friday about them announcing the iPhone very shortly they laughed at me! :-)
