so when shopping for a replacement router for VF fibre, what specs do I need to look for?
Product details dont say anything useful like "compatible with VF fibre".

VLAN10 tagging on the WAN port, and ideally support for full gigabit routing. Sometimes full gigabit routing relies on "hardware NAT", "cut through forwarding" and/or "fastpath", but good luck finding those written on the box. The router guide is a good starting point.
Only for DSL. If you're on Fibre or FibreX, just a router will be fine (and is probably preferable).

Sorry, preferable to what? The HG659b ?
Let's see, to replace my HG659 I will need an ATA, a router, and a wifiAP.
Its unlikely another all-in-one will do the job any better than the HG659b, though the new VF Ultra Home Hub might?
To save on power points, are there any devices that combine at least two of those components?

OK, I've tried flooding my HG659b with connections.
I'm finding it very tricky to keep 38 devices all "awake" at the same time while I ping them to see if they are on the LAN or not.
I just dont have enough arms and hands.
Are there any tools I could use to help?

richms: With wifi lightbulbs and sockets etc that limit seems very low now days.
Yeah, I had to unplug all my Wemos when the rellies came to stay.

You still use a landline?
Wow.
I don't think I will ever have another landline again. I can't justify it. If you really need one, there are ways around it with V/F, (I didnt figure it out but it can be done with things like PAP2T's etc).
Get a good router with hardware acceleration. I have an Edgerouter PoE, and a Mikrotik, both def cut the mustard.
You can spend a bit less and get an Edgerouter Lite, the Mikrotik's (Get a dual core+ model) are around the same price.
You can still use your HG659 for wifi, and disable DHCP.
I have a landline as I have next to no cellphone signal.
I think that's a reasonable excuse.
Am trying to work out different set up scenarios, so all suggestions welcome.
